Kemira's KemConnect DEX Receives EPA Approval in the US

Kemira, a leading provider of sustainable chemical solutions for water-intensive industries, announced that it has received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration for its peracetic acid (PFA)-based process water treatment solution, which is the core component of KemConnect DEX. This approval demonstrates Kemira's capacity to provide water treatment facilities with an environmentally friendly and effective alternative to chlorine, as well as its ability to perform real-time monitoring and control through data utilization.

KemConnect DEX has been in use in Europe for over a decade and was recently applied in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. As part of Paris Water Authority's efforts to make the Seine River swimmable for athletes, the solution was implemented as an additional treatment step at the Seine Amont facility, Europe's second largest wastewater treatment plant. Thanks to the PFA-based solution, athletes were able to compete in seven river-based events for the first time since the 1900 Paris Olympics.

Senior Vice President, Kemira Water Solutions Tuija Pohjolainen-Hiltunen, commented on the matter as follows:
"Chlorine-based solutions, long used in water treatment, are no longer the most sustainable option because they can create potentially harmful byproducts that may disrupt natural water balance. The EPA registration enables us to offer U.S. customers a sustainable solution that leaves no harmful byproducts, degrades within minutes, and ensures water safety."

KemConnect DEX, as a chlorine-free alternative, is supported by powerful technology and data-driven intelligence to improve operations and reduce energy consumption. The solution monitors and controls data from wastewater flows from a compact on-site generator and residual PFA on a digital platform. This data is fed into Kemira's proprietary algorithm and helps water treatment facilities optimize PFA dosing while enhancing sustainability performance.

Pohjolainen-Hiltunen further added:
"Municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities must comply with changing regulatory requirements while facing challenges such as climate change, growing population, and resource scarcity. With KemConnect DEX, our facilities can automatically ensure regulatory compliance while controlling bacteria below permitted limits."

KemConnect DEX is planned to be made available commercially across the United States as state and local registrations for its core component are completed.
