Forests Play Critical Role in Reducing Carbon Emissions
Prof. Dr. Ender Makineci, Faculty Member at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Forestry, stated that forest ecosystems play an important role in reducing atmospheric carbon emissions.
Prof. Dr. Makineci, who came to Edirne for a conference hosted by Trakya University, noted that forests protect soil and clean the air while providing habitat for wildlife.
Makineci pointed out that concentrations of carbon and other methane gases in the atmosphere have increased due to global warming.
Noting that forests contain thousands of trees of different species, Makineci stated that trees trap carbon dioxide gas through photosynthesis.
Emphasizing that forests play a very important role in preventing the increase of carbon accumulated in the atmosphere due to global warming, Makineci explained: "Since they retain through photosynthesis the carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, forest ecosystems are the most important ecosystems globally for carbon sequestration. Forests play a very important role in reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere."
Makineci explained that forest resources must be preserved and sustainably passed on to future generations.
Stating that measures must be increased to protect forests from fires and illegal logging, Makineci continued: "Just as forests are essential for reducing carbon rates, their damage and destruction are equally harmful. Forest cutting and forest fires lead to increased carbon emissions. We must protect the health and existence of forests. We must reduce the pressure on these ecosystems."
