Coffee Waste Transformed into Sustainable Products: Bioplastic Innovation from Sunar NP

Sunar NP, the first company in Türkiye to produce bioplastics and the only one with raw material integration in bioplastic production, is converting coffee and other food waste into innovative biomaterials that can be used in biodegradable products. The technology developed aims to contribute to the wider adoption of sustainable solutions in the beverage sector.

Sunar NP, Turkey's first bioplastics producer and the sole company with raw material integration in bioplastics production, is transforming coffee and other food waste into innovative biomaterials that can be used in biodegradable products. The developed technology aims to contribute to the proliferation of sustainable solutions in the beverage sector.

Sunar NP, combining its experience in agriculture, food and bioindustry with biomaterial technologies, is converting coffee waste into value-added products through next-generation biopolymer technology developed in line with circular economy and sustainable production approaches.

Sunar NP, Turkey's first bioplastics producer and the sole company with raw material integration in bioplastics production, has developed a bio-based raw material that can be used in biodegradable products by combining its corn starch-based biopolymer technology with R&D studies on coffee and other food waste.

Used initially in biodegradable pipettes, this innovative material also carries significant potential for food packaging, single-use service products and various industrial bioplastics applications.

"There Is No Waste, Only Resources Awaiting Revaluation"
Sunar Investment Board Chair and CEO Mustafa Nuri Çomu stated that the developed technology is not merely a new product development effort, but a concrete outcome of the company's long-standing biopolymer technology and R&D infrastructure combined with a circular economy approach.

Çomu made the following assessment:

"Corn starch-based biopolymer technologies have long been among our areas of expertise. This work is one of the important examples of bringing new value to the circular economy by combining the technology and R&D infrastructure we possess with biological sources such as coffee waste.

For us, there is no such concept as waste; there are resources awaiting revaluation with the right technology. In order for Turkey to achieve its sustainable development goals, we need to develop domestic technologies capable of transforming our agricultural resources and organic waste into high-value-added products.

As Turkey's first bioplastics producer and the sole company with raw material integration, we bear the responsibility of developing and producing biodegradable and compostable biopolymers on an industrial scale. The bio-based raw material we have developed will not be limited to pipette applications alone; it has the potential to be used in many different areas from food packaging to service products."

Global Transformation in Bioplastics Market Accelerating
Global demand for sustainable solutions as alternatives to single-use plastics is increasing every day. With circular economy approaches gaining momentum, bio-based and compostable materials are becoming a strategic transformation area in the food and beverage sectors.

Developments in bioplastics technologies offer significant opportunities in terms of reducing fossil-based plastic use, lowering carbon footprint and using resources more efficiently.

Sunar NP's approach to evaluating biological sources such as coffee waste through advanced biopolymer technologies contributes to developing industrial solutions for sustainable production models, in addition to environmental benefits.

Coffee Waste Being Returned to Circular Economy
The biodegradable raw material developed by Sunar NP enables coffee and other food waste generated after consumption to be returned to the economy.

Thanks to technology developed in line with circular economy principles, organic waste that would otherwise require disposal is being utilized in the production of next-generation biodegradable products.

This material, which is biologically degradable under appropriate environmental conditions, offers a sustainable alternative to reducing microplastic formation while also contributing to reduced dependence on fossil-based plastics.

Sunar NP's Domestic Technology Contribution to Sustainable Production
Sunar NP aims to contribute to Turkey's bioeconomy and green transformation goals through the biomaterial technologies it has developed.

The company, targeting the transformation of domestic agricultural resources and organic waste into high-value-added products, continues to develop next-generation bioplastics solutions in line with sustainable production principles.
