Plastic Cutlery and Plates Banned in England

UK introduces ban on single-use plastic cutlery, knives, plates and trays. The British government aims to protect nature from plastic waste pollution with the implementation of a ban on certain single-use plastics. However, local authorities are warning that some businesses are not prepared for the change. Businesses that continue to supply banned single-use plastics may face fines and be subject to inspection by local authorities, though the measure will not cover plastic products used by supermarkets or delivery services. Similar bans are in place in Scotland, while single-use plastic straws, stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton swabs were banned in England in 2020. Scotland banned single-use plastic products for businesses in June 2022. Wales also approved similar legislation in December 2022, though some parts of the measure may not take effect until 2026.

Only 10 percent of single-use plastics are recycled

Data in the UK shows that approximately 1.1 billion single-use plastic plates and 4.25 billion cutlery sets are used annually, with only 10 percent being recycled after use. The European Union (EU) has introduced new regulations in recent years to reduce the volume of plastic waste, and in 2021 banned plastics such as single-use plates, cutlery, cups and straws.   Source
