Important Step on Climate Crisis: Yeşil_İz Platform
The "European Green Deal: Threats and Opportunities for Turkey, International Comprehensive and Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis" TUBITAK project, led by Prof. Dr. Alp Erinç Yeldan from Kadir Has University Department of Economics, has commenced work. The website of the Yeşil_İz Climate Crisis and European Green Deal Monitoring Centre established under the project has been launched as an open platform for the general public.
The United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) noted that the global average temperature between 2010-2020 was measured at 14.7 degrees Celsius, which is 0.8 degrees above the 20th-century average. In this context, to keep our planet's temperature around 15 degrees Celsius, it is necessary to prioritise limiting CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions that cause warming.
In December 2019, the European Union (EU) announced a transition plan to a completely new production and consumption pattern strategy within the framework of the European Green Deal (EGD). Under this plan, the EU announced it would pursue a strategy placing the fight against climate change and environmental pollution, which threaten our planet, at the centre of European society and politics, with the aim of transforming industry, agriculture, energy and consumer behaviour. In line with EGD planning, EU member states are targeted to be transformed into "net zero carbon emission" economic structures by 2050.
The EGD, which comprehensively encompasses economic, social and ecological objectives, is seen as a herald of a new era and is expected to affect not only EU member states but all countries with commercial, financial and political relations with the EU. For Turkey, which conducts approximately half its exports with the EU, the EGD presents both risks and opportunities.
Yeşil_İz Climate Crisis and European Green Deal Monitoring Centre
Kadir Has University is hosting a project that investigates the effects of the strategic transformation created by the EGD on the Turkish economy, and aims to examine from a broader perspective Turkey's contributions, opportunities and possible outcomes in the global struggle against the climate crisis, and to share these with the public. The project titled "European Green Deal: Threats and Opportunities for Turkey, International Comprehensive and Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis," led by Prof. Dr. Alp Erinç Yeldan, has commenced work. The website of the Yeşil_İz Climate Crisis and European Green Deal Monitoring Centre established under the project was recently launched. Supported by the TUBITAK ARDEB 1001 Programme, the project will continue for three years. However, the momentum created by the project and the findings planned to be obtained are expected to extend well beyond this timeframe. The Yeşil_İz Platform under this project aims to:- Monitor the European Green Deal (EGD) strategy and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), expected to be deployed as a main component of this strategy, within their historical development;
- Examine the expected effects of new commodity chains that will materialise after CBAM on the EGD's international division of labour;
- Analyse the position of Emerging Market Economies that compete with Turkey in global economic competition, and within this framework conduct analysis of threats and opportunities that Turkish industry will face in global competition;
- Monitor the mid-to-long-term macroeconomic effects of EGD and CBAM implementation on the Turkish economy as a whole;
- Discuss possible reverse effects on EU growth and emissions pathways of the adjustment mechanisms created by Turkey's stance and policies towards the EGD process;
- Examine the costs and potential gains of the EGD for Turkish financial circles;
- Emphasise the urgency of green transformation for the Turkish economy with the participation of all relevant stakeholders.
