Important Step for Climate Crisis: Yeşil_İz Platform
Work has begun on the TÜBİTAK project titled "European Green Deal: Threats and Opportunities for Turkey, International Comprehensive and Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis," led by Prof. Dr. Alp Erinç Yeldan from the Economics Department of Kadir Has Üniversitesi. The website of the Yeşil_İz Climate Crisis and European Green Deal Monitoring Centre, established within the project scope, has also been launched as a platform open to the general public.
The United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recorded that the global average temperature between 2010-2020 was 14.7 degrees Celsius, which is 0.8 degrees above the 20th century average. Given this situation, limiting CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions that cause warming must be prioritized to keep our planet's temperature around 15 degrees.
In December 2019, the European Union (EU) presented a transition plan to a new production and consumption pattern strategy under the European Green Deal (EGD). Within the framework of this plan, the EU announced that it would pursue a strategy placing the fight against climate change and environmental pollution—which threaten our planet—at the centre of European society and politics, with the aim of transforming industry, agriculture, energy and consumer behaviour. In line with EGD planning, EU member states are targeted to transform into "net zero carbon emission" economies by 2050.
The EGD, which comprehensively encompasses economic, social and ecological objectives, is seen as a harbinger of a new era and is expected to affect not only EU member states but also all countries with commercial, financial and political relations with the EU. For Turkey, which conducts approximately half of its exports with the EU, the EGD entails both risks and opportunities.
Yeşil_İz Climate Crisis and European Green Deal Monitoring Centre
Kadir Has Üniversitesi is hosting a project that investigates the effects of the strategic transformation created by the EGD on the Turkish economy, and aims to examine and share with the public, from a broader perspective, Turkey's contributions, opportunities and possible outcomes in the global struggle against climate crisis. The project titled "European Green Deal: Threats and Opportunities for Turkey, International Comprehensive and Dynamic General Equilibrium Analysis," led by Prof. Dr. Alp Erinç Yeldan, has begun its work. The website of the Yeşil_İz Climate Crisis and European Green Deal Monitoring Centre, established within the project scope, was recently launched. Supported by the TÜBİTAK ARDEB 1001 Programme, the project will run for three years. However, it is anticipated that the momentum created by the project and the planned findings will extend far beyond this timeline. Within the scope of this project, the Yeşil_İz Platform will:- Monitor the European Green Deal (EGD) strategy and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), expected to be implemented as a key element of this strategy, within their historical development;
- Examine the expected effects of new commodity chains that will emerge following CBAM implementation on the international division of labour envisioned by the EGD;
- Analyse the position of Emerging Market Economies that are Turkey's competitors in global economic competition and, in this context, conduct an analysis of the threats and opportunities that Turkish industry will face in global competition;
- Monitor the medium to long-term macroeconomic effects of EGD and CBAM implementation on the Turkish economy as a whole;
- Discuss the possible adverse effects on EU growth and emission pathways of the adjustment mechanisms created by Turkey's stance and policies in response to the EGD process;
- Examine the costs and potential gains of the EGD for Turkish financial circles;
- Highlight the urgency of green transition for the Turkish economy with the participation of all relevant stakeholders.
