Historic Success in the Fight Against Climate Change

Denizli Metropolitan Municipality, which attaches great importance to environmental investments to leave a more liveable city for the future, has achieved another historic success in combating climate change. The Denizli Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report 2020, prepared in accordance with the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories (GPC, 2014), calculated greenhouse gas emissions from stationary energy, transport, waste, industrial processes and product use (IPPU) and agriculture, forestry and land use (AFOLU) sectors for Denizli by the Resource and Environment Center (REC). According to the report covering all emission sources within the jurisdiction of Denizli Metropolitan Municipality, Denizli's total greenhouse gas emissions were determined as 6.9 million tonnes CO2e. It was established that 42 percent of total emissions come from stationary sources, 31 percent from transport, 11 percent from industrial processes and product use, 14 percent from AFOLU and 2 percent from waste management.

Target: 21 percent reduction from baseline

The significant decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in Denizli, one of the primary causes of global warming, was highlighted in the Denizli Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report published on Denizli Metropolitan Municipality's official website. In the last published 2016 report, emissions were calculated at 7.5 million tonnes CO2e, while in 2020 this figure fell by 7.9 percent to 6.9 million tonnes CO2e. The Denizli Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report 2020 once again proved the success of the projects undertaken by Denizli Metropolitan Municipality in combating climate change. Denizli Metropolitan Municipality aims to achieve a 21 percent reduction from baseline in greenhouse gas emissions in Denizli by 2030.

Denizli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Osman Zolan, noting that the Denizli Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report 2020 has been published, announced that they have experienced approximately 8 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, one of the main causes of global warming.

Noting that with this result Denizli Metropolitan Municipality has achieved historic success in combating climate change, Mayor Zolan made the following statements on the matter:

"The projects we have implemented in combating climate change have begun to bear fruit, thank goodness. With our renewable energy investments, smart city applications, treatment facilities and all our other projects, we continue to work towards a healthier future. Denizli's greenhouse gas emissions are decreasing. This is the greatest investment in our future. We continue to work with all our strength to leave future generations a more liveable, cleaner, healthier city. I thank all our colleagues who have contributed their efforts and all our stakeholders. Let it be auspicious and fortunate. God willing, we will achieve our target of 21 percent reduction from baseline that we have set for 2030."

Climate change mitigation efforts continue

Denizli Metropolitan Municipality materialized its efforts and initiatives in combating climate change through the "Denizli Climate Change Action Plan" first prepared in 2019. As the 3rd Metropolitan Municipality in Turkey to prepare a plan containing mitigation and adaptation measures, Denizli Metropolitan Municipality has established itself among pioneering and exemplary municipalities and extended its work to an international scale. Signing the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), Denizli Metropolitan Municipality continues its goal of becoming a pioneering sustainable city by submitting regular reports to the global reporting platform Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
