Henkel releases 32nd Sustainability Report, announcing progress made in implementing sustainability strategy and targets. The company achieved significant advances across multiple important dimensions in sustainability, among other areas, despite an extremely challenging market environment. Henkel CEO Carsten Knobel commented on the matter as follows: "We have made progress on the vast majority of our ambitious sustainability targets. In this regard, I would like to thank more than 50,000 Henkel employees worldwide for their strong commitment and dedication." Sylvie Nicol, Member of the Board of Management at Henkel, stated: "We took an important step toward our goal of achieving climate-positive production by 2030. We also made further progress on gender equality. The share of women in management positions rose to 38.7 percent in 2022." The share of renewable electricity use increased to 70 percent, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 55 percent (per ton of product). Henkel reduced carbon dioxide emissions from production by 55 percent per metric ton of product in 2022, making progress on climate protection (compared to 2010 as the base year). The company also increased the share of electricity purchased from renewable sources to 70 percent. The company aims to source 100 percent of electricity used in production facilities from renewable sources by 2030. In December 2022, a 10-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) signed with IGNIS for renewable energy supply exemplified cooperation with energy companies. This will provide Henkel's European facilities with approximately 200 GWh of renewable energy annually. Further progress was made toward 100 percent recyclable and reusable packaging. Henkel also continuously strives to minimize waste and its negative environmental impacts. By 2025, packaging designs will be developed so that 100 percent of packaging is recyclable and reusable*. This share rose to approximately 87 percent in 2022. Additionally, Henkel aims to reduce waste volume by 50 percent per ton of product by 2025 compared to 2010. The company already achieved a 43 percent reduction in waste volume in 2022. Henkel expanded its social engagement further. Targeting to improve the lives of 30 million people worldwide through social projects and donations by 2030, Henkel exceeded this target last year. Henkel succeeded in reaching more than 30 million people from 2010 through the end of 2022. The social impact in this context stemmed particularly from contributions to combating the global COVID-19 pandemic as well as support provided to war victims in Ukraine.
Share of women in management positions increased
Henkel aims to continuously increase the share of women at management levels to promote equal opportunity and seeks to achieve gender equality across all management levels by 2025. In 2022, the share of women in management positions increased further compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 38.7 percent.
Sustainable transformation of product portfolio underway
Sustainability forms the foundation of Henkel's innovation strategies. In consumer products, focus is placed on optimizing components, among other factors. Henkel works with various partners for this purpose. For example, Henkel signed a long-term cooperation agreement with BASF last year. With the help of an approach called biomass balance, replacement of fossil raw materials with renewable raw materials is planned, reaching 110,000 metric tons annually.
