Henkel Plans to Reduce Carbon Footprint by 2025
Henkel is targeting the reduction and prevention of plastic waste with new packaging goals for 2025. Henkel published its 29th Sustainability Report, which details the progress and advances it has achieved across all dimensions of sustainability.
Henkel also outlined its strategic framework for the future and new targets in key areas such as sustainable packaging and climate protection.
Strong Progress Towards Sustainability Goals
Henkel achieved three of this year's targets ahead of schedule: carbon dioxide emissions were reduced by 31% and waste per ton of product was cut by 40%. With a 42% improvement in occupational health and safety, Henkel recorded a performance level beyond its 2020 target in this area. Water consumption per ton of product decreased by 28% compared to 2010. This indicates that reaching the 30% reduction target is highly feasible. The company plans to reduce the carbon footprint from its production by 65% by 2025. Henkel aims to achieve this target by continuously increasing energy efficiency and sourcing the electricity it uses from renewable sources. Additionally, Henkel wants to strengthen its brands and technologies to help customers, consumers and suppliers save 100 million tons of carbon dioxide over the 10-year period through 2025.New Packaging Goals for 2025
In order to advance the progress and activities it has achieved in sustainable packaging to promote a circular economy, Henkel has set new and more ambitious sustainability targets for 2025:- 100% recyclable or reusable*: All Henkel packaging will be recyclable or reusable*.
- Reduce fossil-based plastics by 50%: Henkel aims to reduce the amount of fossil-based non-recycled plastic in consumer products by 50%. This target will be achieved through increasing the proportion of recycled plastic used in consumer products above the 30% level globally, reducing plastic use and increasing the use of plastic produced from renewable biological sources.
- Zero waste: Henkel aims to contribute to preventing waste from being released into the environment. For this reason, the company supports waste collection and recycling initiatives and invests in innovative solutions and technologies to promote closed-loop recycling. Henkel aims to reach more than 2 billion consumers annually through information on recycling.
