Sustainable Fuel Use in Aviation to Rise European Union institutions have set binding targets to increase the use of sustainable fuels to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector. The Council of the EU announced that it has reached an agreement with member states and the European Parliament (EP) on regulations aimed at achieving carbon neutrality in the aviation sector in line with climate goals. The share of aviation fuels provided by sustainable aviation fuels is expected to be 2% in 2025, 6% in 2030, and 70% in 2050. According to the agreement, a competitive environment will be created under equal conditions in the aviation sector, and the supply and demand for sustainable aviation fuels will be increased. While air transport is being adapted to the EU's 2030 and 2050 climate goals, the share of sustainable aviation fuels made available at European airports will be progressively increased.

Airport Infrastructure to Be Made Compatible with Sustainable Fuels

Aviation fuels will need to source 2% from sustainable aviation fuels in 2025, 6% in 2030, and 70% in 2050. A portion of these fuels will consist of synthetic fuels produced using renewable energy and carbon captured from the atmosphere. Strict rules will be applied to prevent aviation companies from avoiding sustainable fuel supply.
