GSK Announces Sustainable Supply Programme GSK announced its Sustainable Supply Programme for suppliers during Climate Week NYC (New York Climate Week), which took place recently. Under the programme, GSK will require suppliers to take action on sustainability commitments starting from 2023 onwards. Under the programme announced at Climate Week NYC, held recently in New York and one of the world's most important climate events, GSK will require suppliers to take action on sustainability commitments from 2023 onwards and will support them in this regard. Supply chains constitute a significant portion of the pharmaceutical industry's environmental footprint. For GSK, the supply chain accounts for 40% of the company's carbon footprint; suppliers are also responsible for a significant portion of its impact on water, waste and biodiversity. For this reason, improvement work undertaken with supply chains plays an important role in GSK's achievement of its environmental targets on net zero carbon and biodiversity restoration. Under the Sustainable Supply Programme launched by GSK, suppliers will be required to take action on carbon, energy, heat, transportation, water, waste and deforestation-free sourcing. In addition, suppliers will be expected to disclose emission rates, set carbon reduction targets, transition to renewable energy and heat, achieve water neutrality in water-stressed regions, reduce waste by 10% and provide green transportation solutions. As part of this new programme, GSK will actively support suppliers in training and adoption of new environmental sustainability measures. Meanwhile, GSK will meet with more than 160 of its suppliers in the coming month to discuss how to work together towards common goals and to identify suppliers' needs in this regard. The action plan to be implemented by suppliers will not only help GSK achieve its environmental targets on climate and nature, but will also help both GSK and its suppliers create long-term value and strengthen their business processes.
GSK Head of Procurement Lisa Martin made the following comments on the matter:
"The launch of our Sustainable Supply Programme is an important step in bringing our supplier partners into our sustainability journey and achieving our climate and nature targets as GSK. As a biopharmaceutical company operating with a passion for preventing disease, we must be a leader in driving positive change in environmental systems; we must work in closer collaboration with all our stakeholders than ever before to protect the health of our planet and its people."
