Recycled Plastics in Food Packaging

TotalEnergies and Berry Global Advance Material Circularity With Recycled Plastic Use in Food Packaging TotalEnergies and Berry Global announced their collaboration to make food packaging more circular and divert waste from landfills. TotalEnergies will supply Berry Global with Certified Circular Polymers obtained through advanced recycling of post-consumer plastic waste that would otherwise be difficult to recycle through existing processes. This will help reduce waste and enable Berry Global to use more recycled plastic in food and beverage packaging as well as in health products. TotalEnergies' portfolio of polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene is available as certified material from advanced recycling through processing of circular feedstock at Antwerp's steam cracker. TotalEnergies Certified Circular Polymers exhibit virgin-like properties suitable for top-tier, demanding applications. From 2023 onwards, recycled difficult-to-recycle plastic waste will be converted into raw material at TotalEnergies' advanced recycling facility in Grandpuits, France, which will be built on its future zero crude platform. Senior Vice President Polymers at TotalEnergies Valérie Goff said, "This collaboration with our long-standing partner Berry Global demonstrates the supply chain's desire to make packaging more circular and sustainable, particularly for challenging food contact applications where no other circularity solutions exist, and paves the way toward TotalEnergies' 2030 target of producing 30% recycled and renewable polymers." Berry remains firmly committed to partnering across the plastics value chain to provide its customers with the highest level of recycled content while working toward ambitious sustainability targets. In collaboration with TotalEnergies, Berry plans to expand access for its Europe-based customers to valuable advanced recycled materials certified ISCC PLUS.
