Circular Economy and Sustainable Packaging
Circular Economy and Sustainable Packaging
Packaging constitutes one of the largest solid waste streams globally. Sustainability, circular economy, and environmentally conscious brands have been focusing on recycling in packaging design for many years.
Musa Çelik, Creative Director at Tasarist, noted that there are many ways to produce and consume in an environmentally responsible manner to reduce waste. He stated: "Contrary to common belief, recycling is not limited to low quality alone. It is possible to create reusable systems with longer-lasting and higher-quality designs and to raise consumer awareness through packaging design."
Reusable, convertible, and sustainable packaging, though an old concept, continues to maintain its popularity. As globally increasing packaging waste, environmental degradation, and climate change factors increase consumer awareness, demand for sustainability activities and brand interest are also growing. While recycling is one of the primary methods used for packaging sustainability, Musa Çelik, Creative Director at Tasarist, emphasizes that recycling is not the only option. He stated: "Recycling is fundamentally a broad concept encompassing all activities related to the reuse of waste.
We can mention several frequently used recycling methods. If the quality, value, and usability of the converted product are lower than the original, it is recycling; conversely, if the value of the new product is equal to or higher than the original, it is upcycling. To illustrate with an example, melting a glass bottle and converting it into a similar glass bottle is recycling, washing this glass bottle and refilling it for similar purposes is reuse, and converting the same glass bottle into a lamp by adding materials such as bulbs and painting it is upcycling.
At the same time, if a product that has reached the end of its life is valued by the consumer without undergoing any chemical or biological treatment, this is also reuse. All these methods can be applied to packaging designs in many different ways, but consumer awareness is a very important point."
Benefits of Packaging Sustainability Are Not Limited to the Environment
As raw material and energy crises caused by rapid consumption, global warming, climate change, and waste problems increase, interest in environmentally friendly design and sustainability is growing. Musa Çelik notes that glass, plastic, cardboard, and fabric packaging materials have considerable potential for upcycling and recycling. He emphasizes that brands can benefit activities such as zero waste and nature conservation in their packaging through proper guidance in the design process, while also increasing brand value.
Çelik also stated: "The benefits of packaging sustainability extend far beyond our responsibility to the environment. In addition to the well-known benefits in protecting the nature we live in, it also provides added value to brands that count sustainability among their missions. Moreover, the vast majority of today's consumers have serious demand for sustainable products. You can make both your product and brand value sensitive from a social responsibility perspective and increase the number of potential consumers you reach."
Consumer Awareness and Information in Sustainability Are Indispensable
Packaging design recycling and upcycling work can be applied through the designer's foresight as well as by consumers with different creative ideas. Among 2023 trends, the prominent detail in sustainable packaging is consumer information. Including information on how the packaging will be recycled or suggestions for reuse in product design enhances the consumer experience.
The unique design that emerges from packaging reaching the end of its useful life provides the implementing consumer with a learning experience, environmental consciousness, and a sense of satisfaction. This in turn increases brand-consumer loyalty. Therefore, providing consumers with an opportunity to improve their own usage or developing methods such as using the correct materials for conversion in packaging can put brands a step ahead.
