Waste Capture System for Seas

A waste collection system designed for the Karabucak Stream running through Kemer district in Antalya prevents marine pollution as part of the Clean Mediterranean Community-Based Recycling Project implemented by the Nature Conservation Centre and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with support from the Coca-Cola Foundation and in cooperation with Kemer Municipality. The waste collection system designed for the Karabucak Stream, which flows through Kemer to reach the Mediterranean, is critical in preventing waste from entering the sea. Following heavy rainfall last week, the system captured accumulated garbage.

Garbage will not reach the sea

Hasan Canlı, Head of Sanitation Services at Kemer Municipality, inspected the system on site and examined the garbage and waste collected following the rainfall. In his statement, Canlı said they conducted inspections at the waste collection system following the red alert warning issued by the meteorological service for Kemer last week. Canlı noted that the waste collection system prevents garbage carelessly discarded by people from reaching the sea, and emphasized that people need to be more environmentally conscious during winter to prevent waste and garbage from entering the sea. The waste collection system was found to prevent plastic bottles, glass bottles, plastic bags, and other waste that environmentally unconscious people discard indiscriminately from reaching the sea. Municipal crews also cleaned the garbage and waste in the area where the system prevents materials from reaching the sea.
