Coveris Launches Recyclable Packaging
Coveris Launches Recyclable, Reduced-Plastic Cheese Packages for Iceland
Coveris, a leading sustainable packaging manufacturer, has launched a range of recyclable, reduced-plastic pouches for Iceland's shredded cheese.
Coveris' innovative MonoFlexBE pouches, which transition from a former mixed nylon laminate to a new fully recyclable polyethylene (PE) monolayer, use 1 g less plastic per package to offer an easy-to-recycle solution with significant plastic weight savings. The packages, which maintain existing shelf life and deliver comparable functional performance, also support the retailer's food waste reduction commitments and Coveris' "Zero Waste" vision.

Available in 250 g packages of Iceland's shredded mature and mild cheddar cheese and shredded mozzarella, the new lightweight bags can deliver approximately 7 tons of total plastic weight savings annually. Additionally, 41 tons of plastic can now be easily recycled nationally through the retailer's store plastic film collection service, including store-in plastic collection and recycling services at more than 150 Food Warehouse locations.
Commenting on the launch, Stuart Lendrum, Head of Packaging, Quality and Food Safety for Iceland, said: "Our journey to eliminate plastic will be supported by such excellent work that helps us reduce plastic and ensure that the plastic we do use is easily recyclable."
Mark Robinson, Technical Director of Coveris UK Flexibles, added: "We are truly proud to support Iceland with the launch of the new recyclable, reduced-plastic packages. In line with Iceland's plastic-neutral commitments and our own plastic and food waste reduction targets, these packages deliver significant sustainable benefits while providing genuine sustainable innovation without any drawback in freshness or performance for a technically challenging product with extended shelf life."
Coveris will showcase the packages on 30 June at the International Cheese and Dairy Products Awards at Staffordshire County Showground.
