Çaycuma Municipality Launches Pilot Program for Source Separation of Packaging Waste The City Council operating in Çaycuma district of Zonguldak has launched a pilot application for source separation of packaging waste at Ören Yapı residential complex. Tuğrul Dereli, Chairman of Çaycuma City Council, stated in his remarks: "Global warming emerging in this century, industrialization threatening the environment, and environmental pollution require us to take certain measures. Through measures we will take at both institutional and individual levels, it is possible to leave a much cleaner world for future generations. One of these measures is reducing garbage from our homes significantly through zero-waste practices.

Packaging waste is not garbage

Çaycuma Municipality, with the awareness that "packaging waste is not garbage, it is recyclable and adds value to the national economy," has been collecting packaging waste separately from general waste for approximately 6 years and sorting it at its packaging waste separation facility to contribute to the economy. With the pilot application we have launched at Ören Yapı residential complex, we aim to raise awareness and consciousness among our citizens to sort packaging waste (paper waste, glass waste, metal waste, plastic waste) at the source and place them separately in color-coded packaging waste bins—blue for paper waste, grey for metal waste, yellow for plastic waste, and green for glass waste. For this purpose, we will provide training and conduct regular monitoring and inspections. When we as citizens possess this awareness and consciousness, we can significantly reduce waste generation. By reducing accumulations at landfill sites, we can prevent the release of methane gas—a cause of global warming—into the atmosphere from these sites. By sorting packaging waste at the source, we can enable separation facilities to conduct sorting operations with less time and labor. By supporting the recycling of packaging waste, we can add value to our national economy and our future. We can prevent the rapid consumption of our natural resources beyond what is necessary and the emergence of serious environmental and resource problems for future years. Through recycling of packaging waste, we can achieve energy savings. To leave future generations a cleaner future where resources are not wasted, let us sort our packaging waste at home, at our workplaces—in other words, at the source—and place them in the bins designated for these waste materials," he said. Within the framework of the pilot application, information about the application was first provided to site management, block representatives, and apartment maintenance staff, and brochures were distributed.
