Akkim to Reduce Plastic as Part of Sustainability Drive Akkim Kimya has added new commitments to its sustainability initiatives. The company, which has signed the Business Plastics Initiative, is phasing out plastic bottle consumption by the end of this year. Akkim Kimya General Manager Onur Kipri stated, "In light of our mission to add value to life through chemistry, we will increase our support for a better future while reducing plastic use." Akkim Kimya, marking its 45th anniversary, announced its new commitments in this area under the motto "Sustainability is in our chemistry." The company has signed the Business Plastics Initiative (BPI), one of the founding members of the world's largest sustainability initiative, the United Nations Global Compact. As a party to the UN Global Principles Agreement, Akkim Kimya will now implement various programmes aimed at eliminating plastic consumption.
90 percent of packaging to be recycled
Under its BPI commitments, Akkim Kimya will this year phase out consumption of plastic bottles of various sizes used in its offices across all categories. During this process, single-use ayran and yogurt packaging in cafeterias will be fully diverted to recycling. Additionally, by the end of 2022, employees will receive awareness training on the damage single-use, problematic and unnecessary plastic consumption causes to the environment and on reducing consumption of these products. Single-use materials such as plastic plates, cutlery, cups and straws will be gradually removed from all offices by the end of 2022.
"We have taken action to secure our future"
Akkim Kimya General Manager Onur Kipri explained the significance of work in line with BPI commitments. Noting that the company is collaborating with stakeholders for a better future in environmental and social terms, Kipri said, "The importance of sustainability is growing with each passing day in line with our ideal of securing our future today. As Akkim Kimya, Turkey's leading raw material producer with 45 years of history, we have made our commitments clear and taken action with our BPI signature. In light of our mission to add value to life through chemistry, we will increase our support for a better future while reducing plastic use."
