Decarbonization Study Tendered to Aker Carbon Capture
Aker Carbon Capture has been awarded a feasibility study for the development of two carbon capture facilities that could capture approximately 500,000 tonnes of CO2 annually for Röhm, a leading chemical producer.
The collaboration combines Aker Carbon Capture's proprietary amine technology with Röhm's experience in the production of methyl methacrylate-based products. These products are used in applications ranging from paints and materials for automotive to medical applications.
The collaboration aims to support decarbonization targets for both Röhm and German industry, while the work also strengthens Aker Carbon Capture's presence in the maturing German market.
The feasibility study covers carbon capture across Röhm's major production regions in Germany, with a total CO2 capture capacity of approximately 500,000 tonnes annually. A preliminary study already conducted has shown that potential interfering components found in flue gas for operating units such as SO2 and NOx do not pose any technical limitations for the technology used by Aker Carbon Capture.
While total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany have fallen by approximately 40 percent since 1990, CO2 emissions from industry have remained largely unchanged, reaching 181 million tonnes in 2021.
CCUS (Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage) represents a solution for significantly reducing emissions from hard-to-abate sectors such as cement, waste, energy and chemical production.
