Abdi İbrahim, which carries out its sustainability activities with the vision of "Improving the Future," has published its 6th Sustainability Report covering the 2021-2022 period. The report includes 2030, 2040 and 2050 sustainability targets determined within the framework of a strategy to improve the future of the ecosystem, people and business, as well as projects conducted in this direction.
Abdi İbrahim's sustainability report offers a different reading experience with digital artworks designed by artist and designer Bager Akbay and his team, combining human imagination with artificial intelligence.
Planning its sustainability activities with a holistic perspective as environmental, social and governance, Abdi İbrahim shared its 6th Sustainability Report with the public, which contains details of sustainability work for the period 1 January 2021 - 31 December 2022.
A signatory of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) since 2010 and focused on incorporating 10 of the UN's 17 sustainable development goals into all business processes, strategies and operations, Abdi İbrahim's disclosed report also includes qualitative and quantitative data covering the General Headquarters and Esenyurt Production Complex.
Prepared in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, the report transparently shares Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emission data for 2021 and 2022, verified with limited assurance by an independent third-party organization.
Improving the Future of the Ecosystem, People and Business
Aiming to create meaningful transformation that shapes and improves the future by combining changes initiated with international leadership and the "Improving the Future" vision, Abdi İbrahim focuses on three key areas in its sustainability journey: improving the future of the ecosystem, improving the future of people and improving the future of business. Under the umbrella of Improving the Future of the Ecosystem, the company successfully completed Phase 1 of the Green Harmonization project, one of the most prominent projects of its low-carbon packaging strategy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from packaging materials by 28 percent per product using an artificial intelligence-based intuitive optimization algorithm—a first in the global pharmaceutical industry. Through the project, Abdi İbrahim achieved 179 tons of packaging material savings, energy equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 150 households and annual material savings of EUR 1 million. In addition, Abdi İbrahim became the first Turkish pharmaceutical company to internationally certify that the electricity it has used at its General Headquarters and Esenyurt Production Complex since 2020 is produced from renewable energy sources. Reporting to the CDP since 2020 and achieving A-list status in the Climate Change Program in 2023, Abdi İbrahim reached the position of the first and only Turkish pharmaceutical company whose commitments were approved by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in 2022. The company also advanced its targets by committing to set a "2050 Net Zero Emissions Target" in line with the SBTi Net Zero Standard. Under the umbrella of Improving the Future of People, Abdi İbrahim, focusing on both employees and society, is implementing applications that provide employees with a fair working environment while respecting diversity, equality and inclusion, as well as training and development programs that will equip employees with new competencies to adapt to the global transformation process driven by technology and artificial intelligence. In addition, during this period Abdi İbrahim increased the number of women in both its Leadership Team and overall workforce, and continued to implement innovative practices in career management and leadership development for employees. Moreover, Abdi İbrahim contributes to the well-being of society by supporting scientific awareness through social innovation, volunteering activities and community investments. In this regard, the company established Abdi İbrahim Foundation in 2021 to operate in sports, education and health. In 2022, it opened the Abdi İbrahim Foundation Goodness Home, where families of children undergoing cancer treatment can stay free of charge. Under its community investment programs, it implemented numerous value-added projects under the titles of "Social Innovation in Health," "Raising Scientific Awareness Among Young People" and "Corporate Volunteering Projects." Under the umbrella of Improving the Future of Business, Abdi İbrahim aims to advance its leadership in biotechnology in Turkey to international levels. In line with the vision of producing biotechnological products from the cell level in the country, the company makes investments to build a broad product portfolio, conducts research to develop its business model, and includes the supply chain in this transformation while operating according to responsible purchasing principles. During this period, Abdi İbrahim also focused on growth abroad, R&D and facility investments, achieving a 10 percent increase in net sales in foreign markets compared to 2020. In the same period, it spent TRY 192 million on R&D and invested USD 53 million. In facility investments, it brought the most advanced nebulizer technology used in treating respiratory diseases to Turkey and opened the Sterile Inhalation Facility. Additionally, the company continued to increase the share of local suppliers in its purchasing operations in Turkey, raising the ratio of local suppliers to all suppliers to 72 percent in 2022."We support our sustainability strategy with key targets we have set for 2030, 2040 and 2050"
Dr. M. Oğuzcan Bülbül, Head of Human Resources, Corporate Communications and Sustainability Group at Abdi İbrahim, provided the following information regarding the report content: "For us, sustainability means using the power of science and technology to prevent the emergence of crises caused by climate change that our world faces, minimize our risks and manage those already affecting our business processes in the most ideal way. Our mission in this direction is to create more value for our stakeholders while using fewer resources; thereby opening the doors to a healthier, more livable and better future. In order to keep up with the changes we are experiencing and the green transition, we aim to be part of trends that shape the future, changing stakeholder expectations, lifestyles and solutions developed at local and international levels regarding climate crisis mitigation; while doing all this, we aim to create sustainable value by improving the lives we touch. We support our sustainability strategy, which is designed with a long-term value creation focus, with key targets we have set for 2030, 2040 and 2050. An important feature that sets our 6th Sustainability Report apart from similar ones is the innovative perspective we captured through the use of artificial intelligence in its visual world and foreword. Our report, which we titled 'A Symphony of Dreamers and Artificial Intelligence for a Sustainable Future,' was designed by combining human imagination with artificial intelligence applications. By merging the broad capabilities of artificial intelligence with the unique and boundless imagination of humans in the same pot, we wanted to emphasize the power of adaptation and flexibility embedded in Abdi İbrahim's DNA. Our projects at Abdi İbrahim such as optimizing production, implementing packaging designs created using artificial intelligence technologies in line with our Green Harmonization strategy, and producing personalized vitamins with advanced 3D printers, together with many other sustainability initiatives, are running in perfect harmony with Abdi İbrahim's HEAL2050 sustainability strategy. As a company that has pioneered many firsts in the pharmaceutical industry, we will continue to adopt a restorative and proactive approach that leads change and transformation in sustainability." The digital artworks appearing on the cover and separator pages of the report, as well as the foreword of the report designed through innovative collaboration between art and technology, were also created with artificial intelligence support. Through this dynamic collaboration, curated by artist Bager Akbay, the company aims to present its activities in a visually appealing and accessible manner, enabling stakeholders to engage with the content more deeply. Bager Akbay expressed his pleasure at contributing to the sustainability report, saying: "We are at a time when we are approaching the physical limits of the world, and we also know that for a while longer we will have no alternative to this magnificent planet that sustains us. Humanity will either slowly emerge from adolescence and learn to become adults, or the world will teach us. As a team, we produced works for Abdi İbrahim's 6th Sustainability Report with this motivation. The fact that both the subject of the report and the way it is produced are digital led us to produce the visuals in it without physical material. On the one hand, using artificial intelligence fed by aesthetic images and culture produced by people for centuries, on the other hand, staying away from material consumption was quite meaningful and enjoyable for us. I believe there is a link between using artificial intelligence designs and the goal of a sustainable world. Namely, when technology is properly designed and used, it works like a kind of resource compression algorithm. It allows us to use our labor and resources more focused and appropriately. In this project, by increasing efficiency and minimizing resource use, we believe we benefited as much as we could from the principles of sustainability."Advertisement
