Solvay Introduces New Epoxy Prepreg for Aerospace
Solvay has announced the launch of CYCOM® EP2190, an epoxy-based system that delivers excellent in-plane performance in hot/wet and cold/dry environments while providing exceptional toughness in both thick and thin constructions.
The material, the company's new flagship product for aerospace primary structures, competes with established solutions for wing and fuselage applications across most aerospace market segments, including urban air mobility (UAM), private and commercial aviation segments (subsonic and supersonic) as well as defense and rotorcraft.
Stephen Heinz, Vice President of Composites R&D, states: "Our growing customer base in the aerospace industry demands composite materials that deliver balanced in-plane properties, damage tolerance and manufacturing performance. We are proud to introduce CYCOM® EP2190, a versatile new prepreg developed to offer significant benefits over conventional primary structure systems and a solution that addresses both performance and manufacturability requirements."
One of the key strengths of the new prepreg system is its superior toughness combined with excellent hot/wet compression properties that provide an ideal performance balance.
Additionally, CYCOM® EP2190 offers robust manufacturing performance that allows fabrication of complex-shaped parts using manual or automated manufacturing methods. This prepreg system will enable customers to use the same material for multiple targeted applications.
CYCOM® EP2190 performance has been proven during customer trials at various U.S. and European UAM, commercial jet and rotorcraft manufacturers. Product configurations include unidirectional carbon fiber grades and woven fabrics.
At a time when rapid adoption and low certification costs are required for innovative applications, Solvay is able to provide customers with a preliminary database for CYCOM® EP2190 followed by a complete NCAMP (National Center for Advanced Materials Performance) general database of currently available materials in 2022.
