What is Polyurethane? Where is it Used? How Did it Enter Our Lives?

Polyurethane entered the historical stage when it was discovered by German scientist Otto Bayer during World War II. Synthesized in 1937 and obtained through the reaction of diisocyanate with diol, polyurethane was used as a substitute for scarce materials, and its wide range of applications was recognized. Particularly during World War II, polyurethane coatings were used in processes to achieve high-gloss surfaces on aircraft, and in chemical and corrosion-resistant metal, wood and wall decorations.

What are the Properties of Polyurethanes?

Polyurethane is divided into two types: water-based and solvent-based. Water-based polyurethane is more environmentally friendly compared to other products and is safer in terms of use. Water-based polyurethane, which does not have wear resistance as strong as solvent-based products, is also referred to as marine varnish.

Where is Polyurethane Used?

With the advancement of technology, the applications of polyurethane have also expanded. Looking globally, we can say that more than 75% of PU consumption is for foam production. While flexible and rigid foams hold equal market shares, they are generally used together with other materials.

Flexible foams are used behind upholstery fabrics in furniture, while rigid foams are used inside the metal and plastic walls of refrigerators and freezers. Likewise, the use of rigid foams is common in the construction sector.

In recent times, the use of polyurethane in the textile sector has become increasingly widespread. The function of polyurethane in the furniture industry is to serve as cushioning material used for upholstered furniture. At the same time, it makes furniture more durable and comfortable. Polyurethane in the medical field; is used in hospital beds, catheters, injection-coated devices, wound dressings, surgical drapes and similar applications. Polyurethanes used in the maritime sector are referred to as polyurethane epoxy. This substance protects the hull from adverse effects such as water, air, corrosion and friction. At the same time, it also provides durability.

Advantages of Using Polyurethane

Let us also discuss the advantages of using polyurethane. It is pressure-resistant and creates a sandwich between the fluid it carries and the jacket pipe. PU provides sound insulation, is easy to apply and has a lifespan of approximately one century. It has the lowest thermal conductivity among other insulation materials, and the thermal conductivity coefficient is between 0.017 – 0.019 Kcal/m h °C. In short, polyurethane, which entered our lives during World War II, is present today in virtually everything we touch, live in and that makes our lives easier. It is clear that with advancing technology, its range of applications will expand even further.

How is Polyurethane Varnish Used?

Oil-based polyurethanes must be kept away from heat and fire due to their flammable properties. At the same time, areas where work with oil-based polyurethane is performed must be adequately ventilated. Additionally, when using the product, it is essential to work with respiratory masks, gloves and protective clothing. Solvent-based polyurethanes cure slowly in cold and humid environments. Due to this property, solvent-based polyurethanes must be completely dry before the second coat is applied.
