What You Should Know About Glass Fibre Glass fibre, also known as fibreglass, is a material produced from extremely fine glass threads that are drawn through moulds and melted. Glass fibre-reinforced plastic (GRP) composite parts are obtained by reinforcing polyester or vinyl ester resins in various ways with glass fibre. The best property of glass fibre is its light weight. Because of their lightweight structure, they are easy to apply and can be used in many fields. Looking at the characteristics of glass fibre, the prominent properties are as follows: • They are non-flammable but soften at high temperatures due to their low thermal resistance. • When used as a reinforcing element, they show resistance to chemical substances they may be exposed to. • Glass fibres do not conduct electricity. Although this may seem like a disadvantage at first, when we change our perspective, we see that it is a material we can use in places where electricity should not be conducted. We can think of it as a type of insulation material. • Glass fibres are frequently used in roofing and external claddings of buildings. The underlying reasons for this are their resistance to moisture, corrosion, wind, heat and cold. • Their long service life and the fact that this material requires almost no maintenance are some of the factors that make this material important.

Fields of Application

Glass fibres are particularly utilized in building facades. Recently, they have been used as a construction material because they are more durable than steel. Because it is a material resistant to factors such as wind, heat and cold, it can also be utilized in wall claddings. Glass fibre-reinforced plastic (GRP), a composite material obtained by combining glass fibre with a load-bearing matrix resin, is utilized in many fields such as electrical-electronics, defence and industry. Electricity poles rank first among the fields where this material is utilized. Many electricity poles contain GRP. This is because the material has excellent electrical insulation properties. Thanks to this property, GRPs are also used in the renewable energy sector, and GRPs are found both in the load-bearing section and blades of wind turbines. GRPs can mostly be used as load-bearing panels in buildings. Prefabricated residential units can also be produced with these panels. GRP, known for protecting facades, is also utilized to protect concrete and is used in bridge cladding and metro stations. Glass fibre is used as fibre optic cable by utilizing its property of being able to transmit encoded information over very long distances by modulating light, keeping it within the fibre without weakening the light and preventing it from leaking outwards, in communications. Another field where GRPs appear is traffic signs located at roadsides. GRP material is used on urban and rural highways as edge posts, traffic signs, light screens, overhead signs, and especially as acoustic barriers placed at the edges of motorways passing through cities to prevent noise pollution. We know that composite materials are frequently utilized in the defence industry. GRPs are also utilized in this field. The hulls of attack boats and mine-sweeping vessels are made from GRP. The reason for this is that they do not create a magnetic field. This material is also frequently used in mine casings for the same reason. Another field where GRPs appear in the Defence Industry is military aircraft. Many parts of military aircraft are made from GRPs. GRP is used in racing cars because it is a lightweight material. The lightness of a car is important both in terms of engine power and fuel consumption. Since speed and engine power are important in racing cars, GRPs are used, and in the transport sector, apart from racing cars, GRPs are also utilized in the body parts of railways and train wagons. The use of GRP in wagon repairs provides great convenience. Another place where GRP appears is pools. GRP is used both in Olympic pools and in pools in our homes.
