Green Hydrogen Project Becomes Operational

China's First 10,000-Ton Photovoltaic Green Hydrogen Pilot Project Completed and Operational China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation has recently completed construction of the Sinopec Xinjiang Kuqa Green Hydrogen Pilot Project, China's largest photovoltaic green hydrogen production facility. The project is now operational at full capacity, producing 20,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, marking a significant breakthrough in China's scaled industrial applications of green hydrogen. The green hydrogen produced by the project will be supplied to Sinopec Tahe Petrochemical to replace existing natural gas and fossil energy currently used in hydrogen production, achieving low-carbon development through the integration of modern oil refining and green hydrogen applications. The project represents China's first large-scale use of photovoltaic power generation to directly produce green hydrogen. Leveraging abundant solar resources in Xinjiang, the facility includes a water electrolysis hydrogen plant with 20,000 tons annual capacity, a spherical hydrogen storage tank with 210,000 standard cubic meters capacity, and hydrogen transmission pipelines with 28,000 standard cubic meters per hour capacity. The project, the first scaled application of green hydrogen refining, is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 485,000 tons annually. Sinopec has overcome numerous challenges including flexible hydrogen production under new energy volatility scenarios and achieved localization of primary equipment and raw materials. Focused on hydrogen transportation and green hydrogen refining, Sinopec is accelerating hydrogen development by establishing over 100 hydrogen fuel stations and operating the world's largest number of hydrogen refueling stations to date. In the field of green hydrogen refining, Sinopec is advancing integrated mega-scale projects combining renewable energy generation, hydrogen production, storage and utilization, strongly promoting centralized wind and photovoltaic development. In addition to this project, Sinopec's green hydrogen project in Ordos, which will produce 30,000 tons annually, began construction in February 2023, while the Ulanqab project is currently in the planning phase.
