Tüpraş and Gender Equality
Tüpraş, which pursues its activities with a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion in the energy sector, entered Bloomberg's 2022 Gender Equality Index (Global Equality Index-GEI) with its performance in this field.
Tüpraş has achieved significant global recognition by implementing work on gender equality with a sense of corporate responsibility, securing its place in the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index, one of the most comprehensive gender equality studies on a global platform. Tüpraş's participation in the index will also make important contributions to its long-term efforts to promote a culture of inclusion, diversity and equality.
Public companies reporting under the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index are assessed in five areas: women's leadership and the proportion of women in the talent pool, pay equity, inclusive culture, sexual harassment prevention policies and women-friendly brand identity. Companies that score above a certain threshold based on their performance and transparency in these areas are able to be included in the index. The index, which covers 11 sectors, includes 418 companies globally from 45 countries and regions, with a total of 7 companies from Turkey.
"We Are Working to Create an Inclusive Business Culture in the Energy Sector, Saying 'Our Energy for Equality Never Runs Out'"
Tüpraş General Manager İbrahim Yelmenoğlu: "We believe that our inclusion in the index will make a significant contribution to promoting a culture of inclusion, diversity and equality at our company. Creating an inclusive workplace that embodies diversity with equal opportunities is an important goal of our sustainability agenda. At Tüpraş, ensuring that all our colleagues have equal opportunities without any discrimination based on age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, education and national origin is among our top priorities. We are focusing on implementing diversity, equality and inclusion policies, achieving gender equality in hiring ratios at all levels, increasing the employment of women and expanding development opportunities for women. As Tüpraş, we know well that no job has a gender; jobs can only have expertise. We believe that the richness created by bringing together the characteristics that make each individual unique and different is one of the greatest forces that will carry Tüpraş into the future. With this belief, we will continue our work saying 'Our Energy for Equality Never Runs Out', and we will continue to produce the energy of today and tomorrow together with our female and male colleagues," he said."Our Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Committee Will Expand Our Work in Line with Our Policies"
Yelmenoğlu, noting that Tüpraş, as a signatory to the United Nations Women's Empowerment Principles in 2017 and part of Koç Holding, which has pioneering work guiding the field of gender equality, continues to support gender equality in line with these initiatives, continued: "In 2021, we established the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Committee, further strengthening the concrete steps we have taken since 2015. In order to transform diversity, equality and inclusion into a living culture at Tüpraş, we will implement our policies throughout the year and monitor our actions closely by the committee. With the aim of creating behavioral change regarding language, expression and the use of reason in line with our policies, we aim to launch our committee work with awareness training. Volunteer implementation ambassadors will also be identified to carry out this dissemination collectively." Tüpraş General Manager İbrahim Yelmenoğlu, emphasizing that equal participation of women and men in working life and society is extremely important for sustainable development, economic and socio-cultural progress, said: "In line with this objective, we will take stronger steps to ensure gender equality in recruitment." Yelmenoğlu announced that they will continue to create value through gender equality and women's employment activities, which are also included in the target work within Tüpraş's recently announced purpose-driven 2050 Strategic Transformation Plan, stating: "Currently, women make up 10 percent of our total workforce, while this rate is 30 percent in our offices. The proportion of women on our board of directors is at the level of 16.6 percent. Our target for women's representation on the board in 2025 is 25 percent. Our R&D department is 63 percent women. The proportion of women in management levels is at 26 percent. Women employees make up 52 percent of our talent pool. We are continuing our activities with the aim of reducing this figure to below 50 percent. In the coming period, one of every two employees we hire will be a woman. In the short term, our first priority is to increase the number of women employees and leaders at every level and position. We aim to see more women in senior management and to provide the necessary incentives in this direction," he said."We Will Increase the Number of Our Shift-Based Female Field Workers"
Yelmenoğlu, emphasizing that as a pioneering practice in the refining sector, they employ shift-based female technicians and operators in production facilities, said: "Three years ago, for the first time in Batman, female operators and technicians joined us at our refinery facilities in İzmit, Kırıkkale and İzmir. Until today, we have always had female engineers, but the start of shift-based female workers in the field was a pioneering and exemplary practice for both our sector and our company. We aim to increase the number of our shift-based female field workers in production, expand the scope of our project further, and to have female employees in senior field positions such as foreman positions in the medium term," he said. While operating on the principle of equality and inclusion in the workplace, Yelmenoğlu noted that in 2018 they signed into a global partnership with the United Nations Women's Unit, HeForShe Movement and Fenerbahçe Sports Club to raise awareness about women and girls being present in all areas of society, and stated: "In this context, in 2021 we also published a 'Gender-Sensitive Institution Guide' that serves as a roadmap for sports institutions to implement gender-sensitive practices, and to support women and girls to be strengthened through and in sports."Advertisement
