Shell Turkey's Oil Production to Halve by 2035

Ahmet Erdem stated, "Shell's oil production peaked 2-3 years ago and is now in decline. We will have reached net zero emissions by 2050." Ahmet Erdem, Country Chairman of Shell Turkey, noted that the share of oil in the company's energy production will decrease, saying, "By 2035, Shell's oil production is estimated to fall to approximately half of current levels." In his remarks at the Green Business Sustainable Business Summit, Erdem stated that rising populations and prosperity levels, combined with technological development, are rapidly increasing energy demand, and that meeting this demand with existing resources alone is not possible. Noting that Shell's primary approach to energy transition is "more and cleaner energy," he expressed the company's goal of becoming an energy company that has achieved net carbon neutrality by 2050. Erdem pointed to Shell's substantial work on clean energy, stating, "We will achieve 20 percent by 2030, 45 percent by 2035, and net zero emissions by 2050. In electrification, which we all see, we have work underway across all value chain segments through renewable energy and hydrogen. Shell's oil production peaked 2-3 years ago and is now declining. This means we will see the share of oil in Shell's energy production decrease. By 2035, Shell's oil production is estimated to fall to approximately half of current levels." Noting that the adoption of electric vehicles will vary from country to country, Erdem said, "Currently, Shell has approximately 60,000 charging points globally, in our stations and beyond. The number of locations we can reach exceeds 200,000, and we estimate this will approach 500,000 by around 2030."

Bora Tuncer, Regional Head of Schneider Electric Turkey, Middle East, Central Asia and Pakistan, emphasized that green policies will create important social and economic change, stating, "For these policies to work and be accepted, active public participation and trust during this transition process are very important. I believe we need a new collective consciousness to bring together national, regional and local administrations, civil society organizations, industrial organizations and citizens from all sectors." Tuncer recalled that in accordance with the targets related to energy efficiency in the 2012-2023 Energy Efficiency Strategy Document, as of 2023, Turkey is targeting a reduction of at least 20 percent in energy spending per gross domestic product.

Olivier Blum, Global Head of Strategy and Sustainability at Schneider Electric, stated that like all companies, they are working to raise awareness and contribute to global warming and climate change issues, saying, "We design our plans taking into account sustainable development goals. We set sustainable targets 20 years ago and continue to work towards them." Blum noted that all companies are taking serious steps within the framework of common objectives set by the United Nations, and explained that all industry players have continued their operations in recent years while considering the concept of sustainability. Highlighting that they took their first step towards sustainability more than 15 years ago, Blum stated, "We established company programs on 5 main headings for the development of the sustainability concept within the company. We classified our planning as long-term and short-term. After implementing these steps, we received the title of world's most sustainable company in 2021."   Source: AA
