SABIC and Sinopec to Open Polycarbonate Plant in China
SABIC and SINOPEC have announced the commercial start-up of a new polycarbonate (PC) plant within their joint venture SINOPEC SABIC Tianjin Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (SSTPC). The event was attended by SABIC Board Chairman Khalid Hashim Al-Dabbagh and SINOPEC Board Chairman Ma Yongsheng.
Polycarbonate, known for its transparency, high impact resistance and lightweight properties, is widely used in various applications such as automotive components, household appliances, medical products and consumer goods. Demand for polycarbonate and other engineering plastics in China is expected to grow, supported by increased production in electronics, automotive, information technology and building materials.
Founded in 2009, SSTPC is a mega-scale petrochemical complex comprising nine production facilities worldwide, currently producing chemicals, polyethylene and polypropylene. The new PC plant, designed with an annual capacity of 260 kT and a vital component of SABIC's PC growth strategy in China, enables greater collaboration with global and local customers. The development of the PC plant represents an important milestone in the ongoing joint venture and strengthens the partners' capacity to meet regional PC market demand.
SABIC Chief Executive Officer Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh said, "SABIC and SINOPEC, working together, are unlocking significant and mutually beneficial growth opportunities that reinforce the national agendas of Saudi Arabia and China. Our first PC plant in Asia, which strengthens our position as one of the world's leading polycarbonate producers, underscores our commitment to operating and manufacturing in markets close to our customers to increase our service capacity, agility and supply reliability.
For nearly 40 years, China has been an important strategic market for SABIC, and our investment in Tianjin reflects our position as a reliable supplier, investor and partner for sustainable and inclusive growth."
SABIC's polycarbonate production will focus on PC-related industries such as electrical and electronics, consumer goods and appliances, automotive, healthcare products and building applications, and will primarily serve customers in the Greater China region. SABIC's portfolio of PC materials produced at SSTPC will be marketed under the LEXAN™ resin brand.
