Nynas Launches Naphthenic Specialty Oils Portfolio with Proven Benefits for Sealant Compounds Nynas has introduced the new NYFLEX® 2120B white oil for sealant compound formulators and a product portfolio of various naphthenic specialty oils. This portfolio offers cost-effective alternatives to silicone fluids while reducing issues stemming from microbial growth and maintaining optimal balance among viscosity, color stability and volatility. Gaia Franzolin, Marketing Director at Nynas, states: "Our NYFLEX naphthenic oils product line can partially or completely replace silicone fluids, thereby enabling the production of a product with optimum performance at lower manufacturing costs." Nynas anticipates strong interest in these new products as global silicone supply constraints have driven price increases and silicone-based product manufacturers have begun seeking suitable and more cost-effective alternatives for their formulations. Emma Öberg, Development Engineer at Nynas, notes: "This product group enables formulation flexibility and strikes the right balance among important performance criteria such as polymer compatibility, mass loss and color stability." "The optimized compatibility of NYFLEX® 2120B and NYFLEX 2005 is of great importance for preventing sweating on sealant compound surfaces." All products in the NYFLEX series offered for sealant compounds possess excellent color stability thanks to Nynas' hydrotreatment technology, suitable molecular weights and very low aromatic content. These naphthenic oils can also reduce microbial growth in silicone sealant joints—a problem that can cause permanent staining and weathering, as well as shorten the service life of joints. Öberg concludes: "Independent expert laboratories examined our insulation sealant samples formulated with NYFLEX® 2120B and reported no microbial growth even under microscopic examination. This evidence demonstrates the complete opposite of insulation sealant samples formulated with paraffinic oils, where unwanted active mold growth was observed."
