Artificial Intelligence Can Detect COVID-19 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertan Serte, Faculty Member at Near East University Faculty of Engineering, received the best researcher award at the "International Infectious Diseases Research Awards 2022" for his work on an artificial intelligence-based algorithm that determines the extent of COVID-19 involvement in the body using three-dimensional tomography images. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertan Serte, who stands out particularly for his publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals in medicine and engineering, received the best researcher award at the "International Infectious Diseases Research Awards 2022" presented by Pencis International Journal. His work "Deep learning for diagnosis of COVID-19 using 3D CT scans" was also published in the high-impact journal "Computers in Biology and Medicine". Although the most common methods used for COVID-19 diagnosis today are PCR and antigen kits, in advanced stages, definitive diagnosis of the disease is made based on the patient's lung CT scans. Three-dimensional tomography images, which vary depending on the imaging device used, are formed by combining hundreds of frames. Therefore, analyzing each frame individually for every patient by human eye to reach a conclusion takes considerable time. Additionally, when human interpretation is involved, the margin of error increases. The artificial intelligence-based algorithm developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sertan Serte demonstrates the effects caused by SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, in the body in a much shorter time and with high accuracy.

Sertan Serte, who received the best researcher award at the "International Infectious Diseases Research Awards 2022" presented by Pencis International Journal for his artificial intelligence-based algorithm that determines the extent of COVID-19 involvement in the body, emphasized that artificial intelligence-based applications continue to develop in healthcare as they do in many other fields. Drawing attention with his work that enables definitive diagnosis of COVID-19 and determines in which parts of the body the disease shows involvement, Serte stated: "Artificial intelligence-supported applications and the development of innovative technologies are among the top priorities of Near East University. It is a great honor that my research has attracted international attention and that I received the best researcher award at the International Infectious Diseases Research Awards 2022."
