Pamukkale University in Denizli completes production of synthetic hair closest to natural hair after one year of research
A specialized team at Pamukkale University (PAÜ) in Denizli has successfully completed the production of synthetic hair closest to natural hair after one year of work.
The synthetic hair, produced by coating special fibers with waste hair collected from hairdressers and melted using scientific methods, draws attention for its resistance to temperatures up to 240 degrees and its ability to be dyed.
Dr. Ramazan Donat, Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Pamukkale University, established a specialized team one year ago to produce synthetic hair closest to natural hair. The team, comprising Associate Professor Donat, Food Engineer and Food Safety Specialist Pınar Koralay, Hair Design Specialist Anıl Gökçay, and Electrical Technician Ramazan Akköse, began work on synthetic hair production. As part of the study, work was conducted on fibers made from natural materials that are thinner than normal hair strands and difficult to see with the naked eye. Waste hair collected from hairdressers and barbers was melted using scientific methods and converted into liquid form. The fibers were transformed into synthetic hair with human hair thickness through 8 to 10 different coatings using melted hair and plant-based liquids. Following testing, it was determined that the synthetic hair produced could hold shape at 240 degrees heat, just like real human hair. Project director Dr. Donat noted that they have succeeded in producing hair closest to natural hair. Pointing out that millions of people worldwide suffer from hair loss, non-growing hair, or lifeless hair problems for various reasons, Donat emphasized that wigs made from natural hair are very expensive. Donat also highlighted that petroleum-based wigs cannot be used on chemotherapy patients and people with allergic skin reactions.Like natural human hair
Emphasizing that they used the recyclable properties of hair and that this is a world first, Donat stated, "As a result of initial trials of our prototypes that provide complete compatibility with the human body, we have obtained a product close to natural that does not change the form of natural human hair, can hold shape at 240 degrees heat, can be dyed, does not cause allergic reactions, and is non-flammable.
These properties are definitely not achieved in petroleum-based wigs. Here we can convert waste hair back into fibers and transform it into a high-value-added product. This will make a significant contribution to the country's economy.
We are producing hair closest to natural. We aim to finalize it soon, begin production, and bring it to market. The high-quality hair we produce will provide great benefits to our country in domestic trade and exports," he said.
Processing waste hair to contribute to the country's economy
Food Engineer and Food Safety Specialist Pınar Koralay stated that the highest quality hair in the world is Turkish hair. Expressing their goal to begin production and contribute to the country's economy, Koralay said, "There is serious demand in this sector in Turkey. We are dependent on imports.
90 percent of the hair used as wigs in our country is imported from abroad. The money spent on the wig sector in our domestic market is approximately 40 million dollars. I believe recycling will make a serious contribution to our country's economy.
Additionally, in the future we will be able to create customized hair design according to the person's preference in terms of color, length, thickness, matte finish, shine, and style," she said.
