Domestic Enzyme Production for Diabetes Diagnosis Through a project supported by Bartın University (BARÜ) and the Turkish Health Institutes Presidency (TÜSEB), enzymes used in kits for diabetes diagnosis will be produced domestically. Bartın University's project titled "Recombinant Production of GDH Enzyme in Bioreactor Systems for Use in Point-of-Care Glucose Measurement Devices" has been selected for support under the Turkish Health Institutes Presidency (TÜSEB) Category A Urgent R&D Project Call. The project is headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dursun Kısa from BARÜ's Faculty of Science, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, with Dr. Lecturer Rizvan İmamoğlu from the same department serving as a researcher.
Enzymes sourced from abroad will be produced domestically
Within the scope of the project, production optimization of the GDH enzyme in the bioreactor will be achieved with high-efficiency production. Thus, enzymes currently imported for domestic glucometer devices (diabetes measurement kits) will be produced in BARÜ laboratories. Upon completion of the project and the introduction of domestically produced enzymes into use, millions of lira will remain within the country.
Domestic production continues in the laboratory established through the BAKKA project
The domestic enzyme research will be carried out in a laboratory established under a project successfully completed by BARÜ with support from the West Black Sea Development Agency (BAKKA). Advanced-level work will be conducted in the Biochemistry and Recombinant Enzyme Production Laboratory, whose infrastructure has been prepared by BARÜ. Additionally, the project will consist of follow-up studies to the work of Beyza Çölgeçen, supported by TÜBİTAK's 2209-B Industry-Focused Undergraduate Thesis Projects Support Program, titled "Recombinant Production of GDH Enzyme for Use in Glucometer Devices." "Our university continues work that adds value to our future" BARÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Orhan Uzun, noting that as a university they aim to add value to the scientific world and Turkey's future through their work, commended Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dursun Kısa and Dr. Lecturer Rizvan İmamoğlu for their efforts. Rector Uzun, emphasizing that significant progress has been made in realizing Turkey's goal of transitioning from a structure engaged in medium and medium-high technology production to one engaged in high-technology production, stated: "We are making considerable effort together with all our stakeholders so that each day is better than the one before. In this direction, while on one hand we strive to prepare our students for the future in the best possible way, on the other hand we work to carry our academic productivity to ever better levels. With a goal of sustainable development, we are increasing our productivity, developing, and succeeding together."
