Phthalate Residue Analysis Under RoHS Scope Using Py-GCMS Subject Analysis of phthalate residues using Py-GCMS in PVC, rubber and polyurethane foam in accordance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.

Study Objective

RoHS; aims to protect the environment and human health by restricting the use of harmful substances such as mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) in electrical and electronic equipment, and to ensure environmentally compatible recovery of electrical and electronic waste in accordance with technical principles. The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC (RoHS 1) is the abbreviation of the directive on the restriction of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment and was adopted by the European Union in February 2003. Products compliant with this directive may not contain amounts exceeding the permitted quantities of the following materials. • Lead (1000 ppm) • Mercury (1000 ppm) • Cadmium (100 ppm) • Chromium (1000 ppm) • Polybrominated Biphenyl (PBB) and • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether (PBDE) • (1000 ppm) Spare parts for the purpose of repair, maintenance and function renewal of electronic equipment also included phthalate components. Accordingly, prohibited phthalates and their limits have been determined. • DEHP (Bis (2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate) (1000 ppm) • DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate) (1000 ppm) • BBP (Butyl Benzyl Phthalate) (1000 ppm) • DIBP (Diisobutyl Phthalate) (1000 ppm) This directive applies to manufacturers, authorized representatives, importers and distributors of the following products. • Large and small household appliances, • Information processing and telecommunications equipment, • Lighting, • Electrical tools, • Toys and entertainment equipment, • Sports equipment, • ATMs and vending machines, • Medical devices, • Monitoring and control instruments.

Method and Materials

This study was conducted using a Shimadzu GCMS-QP2020 NX model GCMS with pyrolysis unit. Equipment and Chemicals Used 1. GCMS with pyrolysis unit 2. Analytical balance (0.00001 g precision) 3. Shimadzu Standard Kit 4. Sample Preparation Kit 5. Sample Container (phthalate-free) 6. Glass Wool 7. NMIJ CRM 8152a
Sample and Solution Preparation
• Sample Preparation 0.5 mg sample is carefully weighed in sample containers and glass wool is added. • Preparation of Calibration Standards In sample containers, 0.5 mg each of blank, 100 ppm and 1000 ppm standards are carefully weighed and glass wool is added.
Results and Evaluation / Results and Evaluation
1. Chromatograms / 1. Chromatograms
2. Evaluation
Blank: System contamination is checked. 100 ppm Standard: System sensitivity is checked. 1000 ppm Standard: Used in sample evaluation.
