ICKEM Conference Held at Istanbul University Doctoral Hall
The 13th International Conference on Key Engineering Materials (ICKEM) was held at the Istanbul University (İÜ) Doctoral Hall under the sponsorship of Istanbul University, Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) and BioNanoTeam.
At the conference, speakers included Prof. Dr. Zeki Candan, Founder of the Biomaterials and Nanotechnology Research Group & BioNanoTeam; Member of Turkish Academy of Sciences & TÜBA Young Academy; Faculty Member of the Forest Industry Engineering Department at İÜ Forest Faculty; Prof. Dr. Alexander M. Korsunsky, Engineering Science Professor at Trinity College, University of Oxford, Founder of the Multi-Beam Laboratory for Engineering Microscopy at University of Oxford, and Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier's Materials and Design journal; Prof. Dr. Kwang Leong Choy, Materials Science Professor at Duke Kunshan University; Prof. Dr. Geoffrey Mitchell, Internationalization Officer at the Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development at Leiria Polytechnic Institute; Prof. Dr. İlhan Satman, Faculty Member of the Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Department at Istanbul Medical Faculty, Istanbul University; and Prof. Dr. Artur Mateus, Deputy Director of the Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development at Leiria Polytechnic Institute.
The main topics of the conference covered biomaterials in different applications, new composite materials in life applications, application of new materials in civil engineering, developments in materials and manufacturing technology, materials and technologies in environmental engineering, studies on corrosion, coatings and aspects of chemical engineering, electrical, electronic and optoelectronic materials: synthesis and applications, nanomaterials, nanocomposites and trends in nanotechnology development.
Prof. Dr. Zeki Candan, who served as Co-Chair of the conference together with Prof. Dr. Alexander M. Korsunsky from University of Oxford, expressed his gratitude in the opening remarks to İÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut Ak and İÜ Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Oral Öncül, Turkish Academy of Sciences & TÜBA President Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker, the Biomaterials and Nanotechnology Research Group & BioNanoTeam, and all those who contributed to the organization.
He expressed great pleasure at organizing such an important conference with leading scientists from diverse countries around the world in the centennial year of the Republic.
Prof. Dr. Alexander M. Korsunsky, Engineering Science Professor at Trinity College, University of Oxford, Founder of the Multi-Beam Laboratory for Engineering Microscopy at University of Oxford, and Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier's Materials and Design journal, conveyed the conference topic and first spoke about the history of the conference.
Prof. Dr. Korsunsky, stating that he has chaired these conferences for more than a decade, noted that the conference series initially started in South Asia, and that the 13th conference was being held in Istanbul, expressing his satisfaction about this.
Prof. Dr. Korsunsky also expressed his sorrow regarding the earthquake disaster in Turkey and Syria, mentioning that the international community was trying to help as much as possible. He said that in connection with this conference, a small workshop on materials and design was being organized, and that the topic he would present has been actively pursued at Oxford for over 10 years.
Prof. Dr. Korsunsky discussed correlation microscopy, relative microscopy, efforts to improve the capabilities of lithium-ion batteries, digital image correlation, energy and environmental science, engineering development, correlative microscopy, multimodal microscopy, multimodal X-ray techniques, multiscale strain analysis, FIB as a tool for micro and nano samples, FIB 3D and FIB applications.
"Stronger, More Durable and Intelligent"
Prof. Dr. Kwang Leong Choy, Materials Science Professor at Duke Kunshan University, began his presentation by stating that low energy consumption and low CO2 emissions reduce harmful chemical waste and simultaneously help create high value through technology. Prof. Dr. Choy noted that the question of how to promote low energy consumption and low-carbon sustainable development and how to overcome these challenges has been extensively researched. Prof. Dr. Choy stated that the focus of his research is on how to make the synthesis of materials with low energy consumption cost-effective, and that carbon footprint loads, environmental impacts of waste, and recycling possibilities are addressed to develop recovery and clean materials. He further said that he wants to develop clean energy applications and materials that can improve performance, materials that are stronger, more durable and intelligent, that can extend the component's lifespan, reduce maintenance, and are economical multifunctional materials."We Are Focusing on Direct Digital Manufacturing"
Prof. Dr. Geoffrey Mitchell, Internationalization Officer at the Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development at Leiria Polytechnic Institute, said "We are a center of excellence in the field of digital manufacturing. But what do we do well?" and added "We are focusing on direct digital manufacturing." Speaking about Industry 4.0 and complete digitalization of industry, Prof. Dr. Mitchell discussed developing a more digitally-based industry. Prof. Dr. Mitchell stated that one of the topics of the presentation was entering a truly digital age, and spoke about the importance of 3D printers, showing his own 3D sculpture as an example. Saying that technologies like 3D printing are mass customization, Prof. Dr. Mitchell stated that 3D printing would perhaps enable the design of products using much less material, which is most important for carbon footprint, and concluded his remarks by discussing the importance of sustainability with recyclable objects. Prof. Dr. İlhan Satman, Faculty Member of the Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Department at Istanbul Medical Faculty: "It is a pleasure for me to participate in a scientific conference on material design." Prof. Dr. Satman said that diabetes patient education and his particular area of interest fall within his field, and according to the latest estimates from the International Diabetes Federation in 2020, approximately 10 percent of people in the world may have diabetes. Speaking about the prevalence of diabetes and particularly its occurrence in adult people, Prof. Dr. Satman explained estimated diabetes trends in Turkey through graphs in his presentation. Prof. Dr. Artur Mateus, Deputy Director of the Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development at Leiria Polytechnic Institute, said there are many challenges in 3D printing due to coloring, print manufacturing, print strategies and software that can be used in small machines. Prof. Dr. Mateus, stating that 3D print strategy software can be used in small machines, said that printing is quite difficult, and expressed that when looking at the work of others and existing machines, material is one of the most important factors.
