Talc: Its Role in Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Talc is one of the most important ingredients used in all major formulations of colour cosmetics and personal care products. According to the Mohs hardness scale, it is the softest rock currently available. Talc is used as a filler and plays an important role in most formulations of cosmetic and care products. Talc or talc powder is a clay mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate with the chemical formula Mg₃Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂. Talc in powder form is usually combined with cornstarch and used as baby powder, or serves as a thickening and lubricating additive in formulations. Talc has many different applications in cosmetics and other personal care products. For example, it can be used to absorb moisture, prevent caking, create opacity and improve the feel of the final product. It serves as a lubricant and imparts softness and shine to products. These properties make talc a common ingredient in cosmetics, food additives and industrial products. Talc is considered a non-allergenic and non-irritating product and is regarded as an ideal choice for many physical applications. Talc powder is highly preferred in the cosmetics sector because of its antibacterial properties and gives the skin a matte effect. It also helps maintain the consistency of creams. In the production process, talc is ground into a fine, soft, white powder, dried and milled. Parameters to consider when selecting talc: 1. Particle size, 2. Oil absorption capacity, 3. Distribution, 4. Dispersion properties, 5. Surface structure and size, 6. Chemical composition, 7. Surface hardness, 8. Purity, 9. Density. Physical Properties of Talc: • Flat, layered, • Hydrophobic, • Oil-attracting (natural affinity with oils), • Partially inert. Application Areas: • Creams, lotions and gels, • Decorative cosmetic products / Makeup, • Skincare (Face care, facial cleansing, body care, baby care), • Blushers, • Foundations, • Eye makeup, • Tablet coatings.

Talc Alternative Products

Over the years, some concerns have arisen regarding talc, with claims that asbestos, a carcinogenic substance, was present in some talc products. While well-analysed talc products have no cause for such concerns, other filler materials alternative to talc can be used nowadays. Some products alternative to talc include mica with particle size less than 10 microns, mica and lauryl lysine, or mica and magnesium myristate.
