Production Target Achieved for "Miracle Plant" Saffron Production targets have been met this year for saffron grown in Safranbolu, the historic town famous for its houses listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, which is also called a "miracle plant" because it is used in many sectors including paints and coatings, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food. Turkish saffron differs from varieties produced in other countries in terms of hardness, color and aroma. Following studies conducted in 2014, it was registered worldwide and given the status of "national plant." Saffron is produced by 30 farmers across 79 decares in the historic district that bears its name. Planting begins in August, and the plants reach a height of 15-30 centimeters, blooming with purple, fragrant flowers in October and November. Only half a kilogram of saffron can be obtained from 80,000 flowers. Used in many sectors including paints and coatings, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food, saffron harvesting has come to an end this year. The harvest target for this year was 35 kilograms of product. Capable of dyeing liquid yellow at 100,000 times its own weight, and selling for TRY 100,000 per kilogram, saffron is also known as "the world's most expensive plant." This year, 36 kilograms were harvested.
"We had a very successful and productive period."
Ayvalık, noting that they reached their targets in saffron harvesting, continued as follows: "The harvest, which started in the first week of October for saffron, is now nearing completion. We were expecting a target of 35-40 kilograms. We reached our target. Currently, 36 kilograms of harvest has been realized." Ayvalık, saying that saffron also contributes to tourism in the district, stated: "This season we faced a high volume of domestic and foreign tourists. Saffron enthusiasts from almost every region of our country and from abroad visited both Safranbolu and our saffron fields. We harvested together, sorted together. We had a very successful and productive period."   Source
