Bottling Reality
When it comes to creating a fragrance, inspiration is typically drawn from nature and our surroundings. For this reason, many of the raw materials used in fragrance creation are sourced from natural objects such as flora, fauna, minerals, or food products.
The use of natural raw materials does not always provide the best solution, and in fact, the final product may not always correspond to the reality that inspired the fragrance, which can prevent the desired outcome.
Throughout the 20th century, as perfumery advanced, new techniques were discovered, and in the 1980s, the Headspace technique was developed, which allowed perfumers to capture fragrance components in the air through various extraction methods.
The use of this technique addressed many limitations in terms of sustainability and resource sourcing while creating fragrances that closely replicate reality.
Headspace is a non-invasive method of analyzing a fragrance without moving away from natural sources. One of the biggest macro trends of the past decade is well-being. There is substantial research on how scent and emotion are naturally connected.
Fragrances can evoke childhood memories and bring you joy, calm or excite you, help you focus, and generally improve your day.
It is widely reported that nature also has a positive effect on our health, so it is no surprise why fragrances "inspired by nature" are becoming increasingly popular.
Mintel reported last year that 74% of U.S. consumers made changes to improve their mental health. Consumers are choosing products that can positively impact their lives.
To meet consumer demands, CPL Aromas combined innovation within fragrance and a sustainable mindset with expert perfumery, taking headspace technology a step further and thus creating a unique technology.
With this method, the fragrance is extracted in a way that causes minimal harm to the source material, and after a Headspace sample is collected, it is analyzed in a specialized GC-MS machine to determine its complete chemical composition.
The analysis is then reviewed by a perfumer and the formula is finalized according to the perfumer's expertise to create a fragrance containing components that are safe to use, easily sourced, or use sustainable synthetic alternatives.
Using Headspace technologies, we can capture the fragrances surrounding us and analyze them. This skeletal formulation is combined and adjusted to recreate the scent of the plant or other source.
During this process, certain components are often found that do not exist naturally or are not safe to use, and must be removed, leaving gaps in the chemical composition. Therefore, our perfumers at CPL Aromas around the world use their expertise to fill these gaps, taking the analysis as a starting point, transforming raw data into a fragrance, and these fragrances can then be used to inspire their future creations.
Dawn Groves, Group Analytical Director of CPL Aromas, commented on the launch of AromaSpace technology: "I am proud of what our teams have achieved with AromaSpace: the accuracy of our bases compared to the original fragrances is quite unique. In AromaSpace technology, I am pleased to say that we have many developments to take our customers' appreciation even further."
Bringing together science, perfumery, and innovation allows us to create unique, naturally scented essences that are respectful of nature and flexible for regulations.
Have you ever wondered how to bottle the scent of a storm? The smell of a kitchen after cooking? Or the scent of a blooming rose? AromaSpace can do exactly that.
AromaSpace is suitable for many applications as it works well with most categories including candles, reed diffusers, and perfumes thanks to its natural aromas.
CPL Aromas has various innovative technologies and sustainable trend setters that can be used together with AromaSpace headspace technology to create more sustainable fragrances that are nature-friendly without harming the environment.
Last year, we launched Blumenhaus, a collection consisting of floral AromaSpace bases featuring scents such as Lady Emma Hamilton rose, Datura, and Hyacinth Blue. Since then, we have expanded our AromaSpace ingredient palette to include Dark Chocolate, Date, and Elderflower.
