Artificial Intelligence Could Detect Heart Failure Rapid advances in artificial intelligence are now being applied in healthcare. Under the 'PROHEART-AI' project launched by Marmara University and AstraZeneca Turkey, the goal is to detect heart failure early using artificial intelligence and wearable technology. Marmara University and AstraZeneca Turkey have launched the 'PROHEART-AI' project. The project aims to achieve early detection of heart failure using artificial intelligence and wearable technology. According to epidemiological data, one in every two heart failure patients who visit hospitals dies within the next five years, and heart failure is identified as the most common reason for hospitalization in people over 65 years of age. This situation makes early diagnosis and treatment of this disease even more important. The multidisciplinary 'PROHEART-AI' project, which involves both the Medical Faculty and the Engineering Faculty of Marmara University, will use wearable technology capable of monitoring certain biological data from the heart in real time through sensors and recording these measurements, and algorithms will be developed based on artificial intelligence using the obtained biological data and clinical follow-up data. The project stands out as one of a limited number of studies that will clinically enable early detection of heart failure through the use of these technologies. In addition to Marmara University, Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Eskişehir Health Sciences University City Hospital, Kütahya Health Sciences University City Hospital, and Elazığ Fırat University will also contribute to the project supported by AstraZeneca Turkey.

"Heart failure is a significant health problem in Turkey and worldwide"

In his remarks at the meeting, Prof. Dr. Ali Serdar Fak, Director of Marmara University HİPAM, stated that the heart cannot send the necessary and sufficient blood to tissues and organs due to reduced cardiac contraction or relaxation performance, and continued as follows: "Resulting heart failure is one of the most common chronic health problems in Turkey and worldwide. Hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, chronic kidney failure, heart valve disease, cardiac arrhythmias, heart muscle disease, or congenital heart disease are among the causes of heart failure. Clinical deterioration can occur in the course of chronic heart failure. Patients frequently visit emergency departments with increasing complaints. Emergency visits and hospitalizations adversely affect the course of the disease and increase risk further. For this reason, early recognition of possible deterioration during follow-up is very important. Early recognition and timely adjustment of treatment can improve the course of the disease."
"We will continue to fulfill our responsibility to improve quality of life"
Continuing his remarks, Prof. Dr. Fak said: "Last year, as HİPAM, together with the M.Ü. Medical Faculty Department of Cardiology and M.Ü. Engineering Faculty, we developed software that can detect heart failure from biological data. It will be published in a scientific journal soon. In this project, our goal is to develop software that will detect clinical deterioration earlier in chronic heart failure patients. We will follow patients with five clinical centers and use the data we obtain with wearable technology. Because we will use real data in a previously planned manner, we believe we will achieve valuable results. Through this multidisciplinary approach project, we aim to create a 'decision support system' in the follow-up of chronic heart failure patients through innovative technologies such as wearable devices and artificial intelligence. We will continue to fulfill our responsibility to prevent the development of heart failure, slow its progression if it develops, extend life expectancy, and improve quality of life."   Source
