Acıbadem International Hastanesi Dermatology Specialist Dr. Hülya Sağlam shared information about 3 skin diseases frequently seen during winter months and warned about the damage masks used to protect against Covid-19 infection cause to our skin. Dr. Hülya Sağlam also drew attention to the fact that masks used to protect against Covid-19 infection and the intense stress experienced during the pandemic also play a role in the more frequent occurrence of certain skin diseases, stating: "Particularly seborrheic eczema, which manifests itself with facial redness, itching and scaling and is known among the public as oily eczema, is seen more frequently during winter months. Rosacea and acne diseases are also among the diseases that show an increase or increase in severity during this season. Therefore, it is very important to take a series of measures to prevent an increase in problems such as skin redness, cracking, itching, scaling and deep marks that can reduce quality of life" he said.

Winter Months Increase Seborrheic Eczema Complaints

During winter months, factors such as cold air and moisture loss increase 'seborrheic eczema' complaints, which is characterized by redness, itching and scaling in the facial area that comes into contact with the air the most. This disease is also frequently seen on the scalp and upper chest area in addition to the facial area. Dermatology Specialist Dr. Hülya Sağlam provided information about seborrheic eczema, known in society as 'oily eczema'. Noting that this disease is a chronic condition that recurs under the influence of masks, cold air, stress, certain foods and many other factors, Sağlam stated: "It is very important to improve skin quality to prevent seborrheic eczema from worsening."

Do Not Use Cortisone Creams

Dr. Hülya Sağlam made recommendations to prevent this disease. Recommending avoiding going outside in cold and windy weather when possible and taking care to cover the face as much as possible, Sağlam also emphasized the importance of moisturizing the skin with non-greasy moisturizers. Sağlam also noted that alcohol-based lotion should not be applied after shaving and that cortisone creams should not be used because they damage the skin. Sağlam also mentioned that laser and light system methods that provide skin moisturizing can be used to improve skin quality. Additionally, Sağlam stated that mesotherapy, which involves injecting products containing hyaluronic acid and peptides into the skin with small needles, also provides skin moisturizing.

Mask Use Further Intensified Acne

Dermatology Specialist Dr. Hülya Sağlam pointed out that excessive skin moisture caused by mask use during the pandemic further intensified acne and stated: "Applying concealer products such as foundation and wearing makeup when wearing a mask prevent the skin from breathing, which can further intensify the acne problem."

Foundation Should Not Be Applied to Skin When Wearing a Mask

Sağlam stated that quite successful results are obtained from medical medications used in acne treatment and that it is possible to get rid of acne and scars with laser and light systems. Noting that fractional laser, plasma energy, thulium laser and dermapen methods are used depending on skin type, Sağlam shared his recommendations regarding this disease. Sağlam emphasized that the skin should be cleaned regularly and masks should be changed every four hours. Noting that products that clog skin pores such as foundation should not be used when wearing masks, Sağlam also warned about not consuming fatty foods. Sağlam noted that carbon peeling can be applied for this disease. He also said that needle radiofrequency (gold needle) can work against acne and can lighten acne scars.

Rosacea Disease Also Shows an Increase During Winter Months

Dermatology Specialist Dr. Hülya Sağlam emphasized that Rosacea (Rosacea Disease) is also frequently seen during winter months. Sağlam emphasized that particular attention should be paid to the skin in this disease, stating: "While antibiotics are beneficial in the treatment of this disease that causes a red appearance on the face, isotretinoin is effective in severe and recurring cases. The most important factor leading to rosacea disease is the long-term use of cortisone preparations on the facial area. For this reason, cortisone-containing products should never be used without consulting a doctor," he said. Sharing his recommendations regarding this disease, Sağlam noted that irritating products containing alcohol and topical cortisone creams should not be used.
