Sanofi has decided to acquire Translate Bio, a company with which it has been collaborating to develop an mRNA vaccine against COVID-19, in order to accelerate innovation in developing breakthrough health solutions using this technology. Since April 2020, Sanofi has been collaborating with Translate Bio (NASDAQ: TBIO) to develop an mRNA vaccine against COVID-19. The company is now acquiring Translate Bio in a USD 3.2 billion deal. The acquisition will expand the potential of the company's vaccines and other therapeutic areas, accelerate the development of currently licensed programs, and support the establishment of Sanofi's recently announced mRNA Center of Excellence. Sanofi CEO Paul Hudson commented on the acquisition as follows: "Translate Bio will provide our research with an mRNA technology platform and strong capabilities that will further advance our ability to develop both best-in-class vaccines and therapeutic options. Such a platform will enable us to develop additional opportunities in the rapidly evolving mRNA field. It will also allow us to accelerate our joint programs already underway. Our goal is to unlock mRNA's potential in other strategic areas such as immunology, oncology, and rare diseases, in addition to vaccines." Translate Bio CEO Ronald Renaud stated in his comments: "Sanofi and Translate Bio share a common commitment to innovation in the mRNA field. The collaboration, which began with an exclusive licensing agreement signed between Sanofi and Translate Bio in June 2018 to develop mRNA vaccines, was further expanded in 2020 to address current and future infectious diseases. As part of the collaboration, two mRNA vaccine clinical trials are currently ongoing. These trials consist of a COVID-19 vaccine Phase 1/2 study with results expected in the third quarter of 2021, and an mRNA seasonal influenza vaccine Phase 1 study with results expected in the fourth quarter of 2021. In addition to vaccine studies, Translate Bio continues discovery research in therapeutic areas including cystic fibrosis and other rare lung diseases, as well as diseases affecting the liver. Translate Bio's MRTTM platform is being applied in various therapeutic areas such as therapeutic antibodies in fields like oncology or vaccines. Sanofi's recent acquisition of Tidal Therapeutics expanded the company's mRNA research capabilities in both immuno-oncology and inflammatory diseases. The acquisition of Translate Bio further accelerates Sanofi's efforts to develop disease-modifying drugs using mRNA technology.
