Otsuka Group Marks 100th Anniversary
Otsuka Group Reaches Century Mark
Otsuka Holding, partner of Abdi İbrahim Otsuka and one of Japan's most established pharmaceutical companies, has reached its 100th anniversary. Like Abdi İbrahim, Otsuka Group is a family business that has carried the mission of "contributing to the health and well-being of everyone in the world" across generations. With 136 production facilities, 29 R&D Centers and 47,000 employees worldwide, the group ranks among global industry leaders.
Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and operating 194 companies alongside pharmaceutical production across numerous other sectors, the group began operations in 1921 in Naruto, Tokushima with chemical raw material production. Among the world's three largest pharmaceutical companies in psychiatry, Otsuka operates in the two main branches of the pharmaceutical industry: diagnostic and therapeutic drugs, as well as nutritional supplements that support health maintenance and improvement in daily life.
The group's other business divisions span food, chemicals, medical devices, electronics, paper and packaging, and transportation. Pharmaceutical production forms the group's most important business segment. In international pharmaceutical operations, its most significant partnership is Abdi İbrahim Otsuka, established with Abdi İbrahim in Turkey.
Abdi İbrahim, which has operated with Otsuka Group for a full 109 years with the goal of improving lives, has partnerships dating back to 2003 and continues to strengthen annually, drawing on the knowledge and experience accumulated from both companies' centuries-old histories.
Established in 2012 as a 50-50 partnership, Abdi İbrahim Otsuka became the first and only company in Turkey's pharmaceutical sector established with Japanese partnership in this structure. Over the past four years, the company has increased its revenue sevenfold and closed 2020 with TRY 222 million in revenue, representing 70 percent growth compared to 2019.
Abdi İbrahim Otsuka transfers Otsuka's innovative products and technology to Turkey and manufactures them in Abdi İbrahim's production facilities in Turkey. By exporting to Singapore and Tunisia in addition to Turkey, the company contributes to domestic production, and thereby to the economy and industry. Abdi İbrahim Otsuka focuses on two main therapeutic areas in Turkey.
One encompasses central nervous system and psychiatry conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and autism; the other addresses specialized fields including hyponatremia, polycystic kidney disease, bone marrow transplantation, and peripheral artery disease.
CEO Higuchi: We Will Continue Developing Innovative Products
Otsuka Group CEO Tatsuo Higuchi stated: "We wish to express our gratitude to our customers for enabling our business to continue for a century and for allowing us to operate as a group of companies with 47,000 people across 32 countries worldwide. We plan to mark our 100th anniversary, this important year, by coming together with our colleagues and employees to reflect on our history and chart a course for the future. As we prepare for the next century, we will focus on becoming an indispensable contributor to human health. We will continue developing innovative products and services and pursue our mission of 'developing new products for everyone in the world as Otsuka people.'" Abdi İbrahim Otsuka General Manager Moonseok Choi commented: "Abdi İbrahim Otsuka was established through the combination of Otsuka, which stands out with its strong R&D in neuropsychiatry, and Abdi İbrahim, the leader of Turkey's pharmaceutical sector which has made major investments on behalf of Turkey over its 109-year history. As Abdi İbrahim Otsuka, the first and only Japanese partnership in Turkey's pharmaceutical sector, we bring together the strengths of both Abdi İbrahim and Otsuka. The deep-rooted and strong histories spanning over a century of both partners, and their nature as companies successfully managed by family members across generations, make Abdi İbrahim Otsuka even stronger. I believe that the two stakeholders of this partnership, Abdi İbrahim and Otsuka, will be sector leaders for centuries to come, providing the most advanced healthcare services to their countries and the world. As our partnership prepares for its tenth year, in the light of a century of experience, we will continue contributing to the health and well-being of everyone in the world."Advertisement
