A Turkish Scientist Will Also Attend the Nobel Summit

An international jury comprising 200 academics selected Dr. Yasemin Uçal, Assistant Professor from the Department of Medical Biochemistry at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine, among 650 young researchers who will meet with Nobel Prize-winning scientists from among candidates nominated from over 100 countries worldwide. Dr. Yasemin Uçal, 30 years old and an Assistant Professor from the Department of Medical Biochemistry at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine, qualified to participate in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, which brings together young scientists with Nobel Prize winners and will hold its 70th edition in Germany this year. A total of 68 Nobel Prize-winning scientists from various fields including physics, chemistry, physiology and medicine will meet with 650 young researchers selected from over 100 countries worldwide and share their experiences with young researchers. The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, to be held in Germany from 28 June to 3 July 2020, has been organized since 1951. Within the framework of an agreement signed in 2009 between TÜBİTAK and the Lindau Council and Foundation, young researchers with doctoral degrees selected from Turkey can participate in these meetings. Dr. Yasemin Uçal, Assistant Professor from the Department of Medical Biochemistry at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine, was selected by TÜBİTAK from among the applicants and was included among the candidates representing Turkey at the meeting.

Opportunities open for young researchers in Turkey

Selected by an international jury of 200 academics to meet with 68 Nobel Prize-winning scientists, Dr. Yasemin Uçal stated: "Being selected among young researchers who will meet with Nobel Prize-winning scientists is very honorable for me and I am very excited. It is a wonderful event that can happen only once in a person's lifetime. In our country, there are indeed plenty of opportunities to conduct scientific research and advance ourselves. Young researchers who investigate and try to make discoveries have an open path ahead. We need to advance our scientific work in an integrated manner with international opportunities."

I conducted my work with local resources

Noting that the jury pays attention to CVs as well as academic publications, scientific projects and research conducted by young researchers, Dr. Yasemin Uçal stated: "I want to emphasize that interaction with international partners is very important, but the TÜBİTAK-supported project supervised by my doctoral thesis advisor Prof. Dr. Aysel Özpınar and the publications resulting from this project were conducted entirely with local resources. Therefore, advancing that work to this point and subsequently being recognized for it is additionally gratifying."

Five days of both education and social activities

Among Nobel Prize-winning scientists from various fields including physics, chemistry, physiology and medicine from 13 different nationalities are 88-year-old Walter Gilbert, one of the recipients of the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, as well as G. Kaelin, Jr., recipient of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Young researchers will meet with Nobel Prize-winning scientists over 5 days in both educational seminars and social activities.
