Modern, Plant-Based Alternative to Lanolin
SOFTISAN© 649: Modern and Plant-Based Lanolin Alternative*
Lanolin, also known as wool wax, is a versatile substance used since ancient times. Lanolin is a substance secreted from the sebaceous glands of sheep and naturally forms on skin surfaces. Today, animals are treated with pesticides to protect them from parasites. The pesticides used accumulate in wool wax and can subsequently cause strong allergic reactions in users. This situation prompted IOI Oleo Chemicals to develop a plant-based, synthetic alternative, and SOFTISAN© 649 became established as a lanolin alternative in the pharmaceutical industry. Pesticides can trigger life-threatening allergic reactions in some people because they are strong allergens. Even though lanolin uses modern complex purification and chemical processing methods to reach permitted limit values, some people can naturally be allergic to wool wax alcohols. SOFTISAN© 649 has a completely different chemical structure from lanolin while offering identical properties: it adheres to skin and mucous membranes as well as lanolin and absorbs 200 times more water than itself. Additionally, when combined with water or moisture, it forms a stable emulsion. [caption id="attachment_131599" align="aligncenter"] Chemical structure of SOFTISAN© 649[/caption] It is a raw material used in many pharmaceutical products and has proven itself internationally. SOFTISAN© 649 adheres exceptionally well to skin and mucous membranes and is therefore particularly suitable for the following applications: Wound care: due to its good skin adhesion, it allows the active ingredient in topical products such as creams and ointments to remain at the application site for longer. Lip and nasal care: because of intensive abrasive movements in these areas, products applied there have difficulty adhering to the skin, but SOFTISAN© 649 provides good film formation, moisturizing the area while providing good adhesion to mucous membranes and skin. Wound pads: with high moisture retention capacity, it keeps wounds dry and accelerates the wound healing process. • Summarized and translated into Turkish from the article titled 'SOFTISAN© 649- The Plant Based Synthetic Lanolin Alternative' in the IOI Oleo Chemicals news blog.Author: Michael Plum Application Engineer, Pharmaceutical Division IOI Oleo Chemicals
