Magnesium Deficiency May Lead to Cancer Medical Oncologist Prof. Dr. Uğur Coşkun stated that according to research conducted by scientists at Basel University, the importance of magnesium-rich cells in fighting cancer has been proven, and that immunity drops significantly in cases of deficiency. Medical Oncologist Prof. Dr. Uğur Coşkun, Chairman of the Association for Access to and Development of Current Cancer Treatments, stated that magnesium, one of the most important minerals in our body, plays a key role in the functioning of many important enzymes. "In their newly published research, researchers Christoph Hess and colleagues from Basel University demonstrated that T cells, the most important cells of the body's immune system, can only effectively eliminate many abnormal cells, including cancer cells, in an environment rich in magnesium. The study also showed how important magnesium is for the functioning of T cell surface proteins called LFA-1," he said.

Prof. Dr. Coşkun stated that hundreds of thousands of cancer cells are created in our body every day, and that everyone's own immune system, particularly through T cells, fights these cancer cells and prevents cancer development. Pointing out that when the immune system is insufficient in this battle, the risk of cancer development increases, Coşkun said: "Therefore, it is very important that this study demonstrates the role of magnesium in the functioning of T cells, which are fundamental structures of the immune system. It was previously shown that intestinal and pancreatic cancer are more frequent in people with low magnesium levels. This study could be instructive regarding the mechanism of increased risk," he said. "A Treatment Method Aimed at Activating T Cells to Eliminate Cancer Cells" Emphasizing that immunotherapy has become the most promising method in treating cancer patients, Prof. Dr. Uğur Coşkun said: "A treatment method aimed at activating T cells to eliminate cancer cells. In our country, it is used in many cancers, including kidney tumors and skin cancer. When we examine this study, we could think that magnesium deficiency may play a role in patients for whom immunotherapy is ineffective. It is important that this issue be investigated in more detail. We frequently observe magnesium deficiency in cancer patients in our country. Magnesium, which is abundant in foods such as legumes, whole grains, and dark green leafy vegetables, needs to be consumed at an average of 300-350 mg per day from these foods. Magnesium deficiency, which is often overlooked, is particularly important to monitor in cancer patients. If adequate levels cannot be reached through foods, magnesium supplements may need to be used. In cancer patients receiving immunotherapy in particular, low magnesium levels may be related to treatment failure," he said.
