Turkey Ranks First in EU for Post-Heart Attack Deaths

While cardiovascular diseases continue to rank among the leading causes of death in Turkey, high rates of heart attack cases continue to raise concern.
While cardiovascular diseases remain among the leading causes of death in Turkey, the high rates of heart attack cases continue to raise alarm. Experts note that approximately 300,000 people suffer heart attacks each year, with approximately 66 percent of these cases resulting in death. In heart attack-related mortality, Turkey ranks first when compared with European Union countries.
353 Out of Every 100,000 People Suffer Heart Attacks
Prof. Dr. Serkan Durdu, member of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, drew attention to the high rates of heart attacks in Turkey in his statement, noting that approximately 353 out of every 100,000 people suffer heart attacks.
Prof. Serkan Durdu stated that this rate is 399 in Germany, 179 in France and 149 in the United Kingdom, and that the most important problem in Turkey is the low survival rate of those who suffer heart attacks. Prof. Durdu said, "The post-heart attack survival rate in Turkey is quite low. Approximately 200,000 people die from heart attacks each year. This rate is 45 percent in Germany, 30 percent in the United Kingdom, and 33 percent in France. In Turkey, two-thirds of those who experience a crisis die with a rate of 66 percent. This picture clearly shows that we need to strengthen our emergency response systems."
"Early Intervention is Critical"
Prof. Dr. Serkan Durdu emphasized that heart attacks can progress insidiously and that early recognition of symptoms can be life-saving, continuing as follows: "Neglecting symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating and palpitations can lead to irreversible consequences. As soon as symptoms of a heart attack are noticed, it is very important to call the 112 emergency line and seek medical attention as quickly as possible. Timely intervention can significantly increase survival rates."
We Lead Germany, the United Kingdom and France in Heart Attack-Related Mortality
Turkey's heart attack data reveal striking differences when compared with countries of similar population. While 399 out of every 100,000 people in Germany suffer heart attacks, the mortality rate is at a lower level. France and the United Kingdom lag far behind Turkey in both the rate of experiencing a crisis and mortality rates.
Explaining the main reasons for this situation, Prof. Durdu said, "Difficulties in early access to the health system and insufficient public awareness about heart health are affecting us negatively. In addition, regular health check-ups should not be neglected."
"Healthy Lifestyle Habits Should Be Promoted"
Prof. Dr. Durdu noted that protection from heart attacks is possible and drew attention to the importance of healthy lifestyle habits, stating: "Balanced nutrition, regular exercise, staying away from smoking and managing stress are fundamental steps to protect heart health. Additionally, individuals with risk factors should not neglect regular health check-ups. Protecting your heart is protecting your life."
