8 Hidden Factors Harmful to the Heart

Prof. Dr. Nevrez Koylan, Cardiology Specialist at Anadolu Sağlık Merkez Hastanesi, listed lesser-known factors alongside more familiar heart-related health risks such as high blood pressure, smoking or obesity:

Cardiology Specialist Prof. Dr. Nevrez Koylan from Anadolu Sağlık Merkez Hastanesi outlined lesser-known risk factors for heart disease, in addition to well-recognized dangers such as high blood pressure, smoking and obesity.

Cardiac disease, the world's leading cause of death, can develop from many conditions that at first glance seem unrelated to the heart. Anadolu Sağlık Merkez Hastanesi Cardiology Specialist Prof. Dr. Nevrez Koylan emphasizes that gum disease, loneliness, sleep apnea and air pollution can all threaten cardiac health. He stated: "All risks to heart health must be well understood and preventive measures taken. For this reason, eating healthily by consuming fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, exercising at moderate intensity for at least 150 minutes per week, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, developing stress control through techniques such as meditation or yoga, and most importantly, not neglecting annual health screenings are all highly valuable."

Gum disease
Gum disease, particularly periodontitis, can increase the risk of heart disease. Inflammation of the gums can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream. This can lead to widespread inflammation in the body and create conditions for various diseases. Conversely, teeth should be brushed regularly, dental floss should be used and annual dental examinations should not be neglected.

Migraine attacks
It is a known fact that patients with migraines, especially those with aura, have a higher likelihood of experiencing heart problems due to blood vessel constriction that can occur during migraine attacks. Conversely, migraine treatment should not be interrupted and regular doctor check-ups should not be delayed.

Sleep problems
Sleep apnea is the interruption of breathing during sleep. This condition raises blood pressure while also causing oxygen levels to drop, which can damage the heart. Conversely, weight control should be monitored, if sleep apnea is present a healthcare facility should be visited for treatment and sleep routine should be prioritized.

Poor gut health
The intestines, which host billions of bacteria, have critical importance for physical and mental health integrity. However, poor nutrition can threaten intestinal health by disrupting the balance of good and bad bacteria in the body and causing various disorders. Conversely, nutrition plans based on probiotic, prebiotic and fibre-rich foods should be preferred.

Excessive exercise
Although physical exercise is generally beneficial for heart health, overdoing it, particularly in high-performance activities such as long-distance running, can create stress on the heart. Conversely, an exercise programme with balanced and regular physical activity should be preferred.

Air pollution
Polluted air is one of the important factors triggering heart disease as it can cause vessel blockages and increased blood pressure. Conversely, time spent outdoors should be limited when air quality is poor and air filters should be used in enclosed spaces.

Stress
Chronic stress and anxiety, as with many health problems, pose a major threat to the heart. Elevated pressure from stress creates additional strain on the heart. Conversely, stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga and breathing exercises should be tried, and if a person has difficulty maintaining self-control, they should seek help from a specialist psychologist by visiting a healthcare facility. Loneliness and social isolation can also increase stress hormones and trigger heart disease. Conversely, if a person feels their social circle is weak, they can try new hobbies that allow interaction with people to strengthen their social bonds.

Early menopause
Menopause beginning before age 40 is called early menopause and this condition can increase the risk of heart disease. The reason for this is that the drop in estrogen levels that occurs with menopause adversely affects blood vessels. Conversely, a healthy nutrition plan should be created, regular exercise should be performed and a healthcare facility should be visited to obtain a doctor's opinion for controlled hormone therapy.
