GSK Announces GBP 1 Billion Investment
GSK announced a new GBP 1 billion investment to accelerate R&D efforts against infectious diseases that disproportionately affect low-income countries. This major investment will support innovation work on diseases that account for more than 60 percent of the disease burden in low-income countries.
GSK announced a GBP 1 billion investment planned to be deployed over ten years to accelerate R&D efforts against infectious diseases that disproportionately affect low-income countries. Through this comprehensive investment, GSK will focus on new vaccines and medicines to prevent and treat malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, neglected tropical diseases that account for more than 60 percent of the disease burden in low-income countries, and to prevent antimicrobial resistance.
Speaking at the Kigali Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Summit held in Rwanda on the matter, GSK President of Global Health Thomas Breuer said: "As GSK, we are pleased to have renewed our long-term commitment to our global health research by combining our scientific expertise, technology and capabilities to prevent disease.
In this direction, we have brought to life our first malaria vaccine RTS,S, the first radical vivax malaria treatment and a new tuberculosis vaccine candidate. We also have more than 30 new potential vaccines and medicines for 13 infectious diseases. I believe we must work with all our strength together to ensure that people in need around the world have access to life-saving treatment solutions." he said.
Through these investments in line with its global health innovation commitments, GSK aims to positively impact the lives of more than 2.5 billion people over the next ten years.
