Excess Salt Intake Carries Serious Health Risks

As eating habits change in parallel with the pace of modern life, the amount of salt consumed unknowingly is increasing with the consumption of ready-made and processed foods. Dr. Emine Dündar, Internal Medicine Specialist at Anadolu Sağlık Merkezi Hastanesi, noted that excessive salt consumption directly affects not only the taste of food but also health in the long term, drawing attention to the risks it poses in particular for the cardiovascular system and kidneys.

As eating habits change in line with the pace of modern life, the amount of salt consumed unknowingly increases with the consumption of ready-made and processed foods. Dr. Emine Dündar, Internal Medicine Specialist at Anadolu Sağlık Merkezi Hospital, noted that excessive salt consumption affects not only the taste at the table but also health in the long term, drawing attention particularly to the risks to the cardiovascular system and kidneys.

The initial effects of high salt consumption are generally seen in the cardiovascular system and kidneys. Intermittent blood pressure spikes and leg swelling are among the early signs of excessive salt consumption. The World Health Organization recommends limiting daily salt consumption to approximately 5 grams (one teaspoon). However, in Turkey, this amount is known to reach average levels of 15–19 grams.

Effects on kidneys and edema
Excessive salt consumption causes sodium accumulation in the body. Sodium's water-retention properties lead to fluid accumulation between tissues, causing edema. Swelling observed particularly in the feet, ankles, legs, and face may increase throughout the day. Specialists emphasize that repeated edema complaints require a medical consultation.

"Hidden salt" danger
Hidden salt refers to salt naturally present in foods or added during processing. Foods such as bread, cheese, olives, ready-made soups, sauces, crisps, deli products, and pickles can contain high amounts of hidden salt. Therefore:

-Consumption of packaged and processed foods should be reduced
-Label-reading habits should be developed
-Food should be tasted before adding salt
-Lemon, vinegar, and spices should be used as alternatives

Seven important harms of excessive salt consumption
High blood pressure: Increases blood vessel pressure.
Heart disease: Increases the risk of heart attack and heart failure.
Kidney damage: Negatively affects kidney function.
Stroke risk: Causes damage to blood vessels in the brain.
Edema: Causes fluid accumulation in the body.
Bone loss: Increases calcium excretion.
Stomach disease: Prepares the ground for gastritis and similar conditions.

According to specialists, reducing salt consumption is critical not only for individual health but also for improving quality of life across the population.
