Support for Sustainable Palm Oil Production in East Malaysia

Personal care company Beiersdorf and specialty chemicals company Evonik are joining forces to support a newly launched project by nature conservation organization World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) aimed at protection and sustainable development in the Sabah region of East Malaysia on the island of Borneo. The project is being implemented in the Tabin landscape, which faces enormous ecological and economic challenges. The sensitive ecosystem is home to numerous endangered animal species and is also an important area for palm oil cultivation and palm oil production – a cornerstone of the regional economy and a key raw material for the cosmetics industry.

Sustainable Palm Oil Production and Wildlife Protection

The project, built on three pillars named "Protect, Produce, Restore," aims to make palm oil production more sustainable and halt deforestation. The target in the Tabin landscape is to reach 20,000 hectares of medium and small-scale producers to be certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) by 2025. Plans include developing a land use plan to establish the foundation for sustainable agriculture and forestry, and working together with project partners to protect the natural habitats of endangered wildlife in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Finally, through the restoration of forest habitats, at least one ecological corridor will be established to enable wildlife to move freely between previously separated forests. Project partners also aim to stabilize populations of endangered species such as orangutans and minimize human-elephant conflict in the project area over the next five years.
