Health Benefits of Oregano

Memorial Şişli Hospital Nutrition and Dietetics Department Dietician Sinem Türkmen provided information about oregano's benefits. Oregano is a highly important nutrient for those on diets and healthy eaters, with numerous health benefits. Türkmen summarized oregano's benefits in 10 points. Oregano has an aromatic flavor and is frequently used to enhance the taste of dishes. Oregano is high in fiber and low in calories. 100 grams of oregano contains 43 calories, 61 mg sodium, 738 mg potassium, 85 mg vitamin C, 208 mg calcium, 6.6 mg iron, and 55 mg magnesium. Additionally, the A and C vitamins in oregano strengthen the immune system. Rich in antioxidants, oregano has many more benefits. Dietician Sinem Türkmen shared oregano's health benefits. Helps Prevent and Treat Disease Oregano is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect cells against damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Consuming foods rich in antioxidants can help reduce chronic inflammation and prevent and even treat certain conditions, including heart disease, Alzheimer's, rheumatoid arthritis, and various types of cancer. Studies have determined that both the seeds and leaves of the oregano plant are rich in various plant compounds with antioxidant properties. Oregano, rich in flavonoids, plays an important role in brain health. Oregano also contains terpenoids. These compounds are also found in essential oils and may provide protection against liver, heart, kidney, and brain diseases. May Help Lower Blood Sugar Oregano has significant effects on heart health. Heart disease, one of the leading causes of death worldwide, can be prevented through proper nutrition. The World Health Organization states that approximately 75 percent of heart disease cases could be prevented by reducing risk factors such as poor diet, smoking, and lack of exercise. Oregano may help lower high blood sugar. Chronically high blood sugar levels can increase the risk of conditions such as insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Oregano is thought to have blood sugar-lowering effects. Has Antibacterial Properties Oregano contains volatile oils such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. These oils contain antibacterial effects that potentially fight harmful bacteria. Because of this, oregano may be beneficial for urinary tract infections. The volatile oils it contains are also believed to help relieve pain from cramping during menstruation. However, research on this is limited. These volatile oils also provide a soothing effect and are beneficial for nighttime sleep. Oregano contains calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus and is therefore beneficial for bone health. Oregano's antiseptic and antibacterial properties can serve as a mouth and breath spray and eliminate bad breath. Oregano is particularly known to be used in the treatment of hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and Hashimoto's disease. Experts emphasize that oregano supplements should still be used only after consulting a doctor.
