Can Skin Blemishes Be Prevented?
Dermatologist Dr. Babür Süer shares the causes of skin spots, also referred to as hyperpigmentation, and outlines a roadmap for prevention.
Many people worldwide seek permanent solutions for skin spots that become more pronounced as the sun appears. Some address this through personal care products, while others benefit from dermatological spot treatments.
Dermatologist Dr. Babür Süer, who notes that demand for treatment of spots also called hyperpigmentation varies by season, outlines the causes of skin spots and a roadmap for prevention.
Dr. Babür Süer provided the following explanation on the matter: "Multiple factors lie behind the emergence of skin spots. Sunlight is foremost among these. Medications used for spot treatment also make the skin more sensitive to the sun. Antibiotics, chemotherapy, heart rhythm disorder medications, or antimalarial drugs can cause spots as a side effect. When spots appear, a brownish appearance develops. Such spots are seen more frequently in advanced age."
"Certain diseases can also lead to skin spots"
Dermatologist Dr. Babür Süer, noting that skin spots can also result from certain conditions, states: "Skin spots can develop as a result of acne or other skin injuries. However, certain diseases are among the triggers of this condition. For example, diseases such as eczema or psoriasis, and problems that cause skin irritation, rank first on this list. Certain hormonal changes such as pregnancy and some medications used by individuals can also produce skin spots," and he continued: "There are actually many solutions for hyperpigmentation. The first treatment method recommended for all spot types is applying a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to the affected areas daily. People with spots due to sun exposure should use sunscreen creams, hats, and clothing in all seasons. They should stay in the shade as much as possible. If the condition requires treatment, various treatments can be applied. Skin-lightening treatments can be offered to patients with spot problems, either taken orally or applied as a cream. Another treatment option for spot treatment is chemical peeling. This method, performed over multiple sessions, varies depending on the patient and spot type. Laser treatment is also frequently used to effectively remove spots and achieve lasting results. Particularly with q-switched or picosecond lasers or microneedling methods, very successful results can be obtained in spot treatment.""Continuity of certain treatments is important to prevent spots from recurring"
Dr. Babür Süer, noting that spot treatments sometimes can be very demanding for patients and doctors, states: "Although successful results are achieved in most patients with applied spot treatments, it is essential to continue certain procedures at regular intervals to prevent spots from recurring. At our clinic, we offer a range of professional treatment options to patients who wish to be rid of their spots. All these treatments are determined by specialist dermatologists based on spot type, intensity, or patient characteristics. We recommend that patients definitely consult specialist physicians to ensure all spot-removal procedures are performed safely." he explained.Advertisement
