New Project for Kidney Failure Treatment

Aksaray Üniversitesi (ASÜ) Faculty of Arts and Sciences Department of Biology faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Karahaliloğlu stated that they will develop a next-generation hemodialysis membrane that can be used in the dialysis process, which is the most common treatment for chronic kidney disorders, and that their project on the subject was accepted by TUBITAK. Noting that the hemodialysis membrane to be developed could serve as an alternative to the polyethersulfone dialysis membranes currently in frequent use, Karahaliloğlu stated that it could demonstrate an advantage in terms of surface properties and production procedure, and emphasized that the membrane would be environmentally friendly and biocompatible.

Drawing attention to the fact that the study could have important outputs for the future, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Karahaliloğlu continued as follows:

"Kidney failure is one of today's significant health problems, and dialysis is the most common form of treatment for this health issue. Beyond contributing to the improvement of the dialysis process, the membrane we will develop could later be transformed into the design of a wearable dialysis machine in subsequent studies. In this way, the hemodialysis process, which requires urban infrastructure needs such as water and electricity, will also be prevented from being disrupted in case of any disaster." Recalling that the project was accepted under the TUBITAK-3501 Career Development Program framework, Assoc. Prof. Karahaliloğlu thanked the members of the "Aksaray Üniversitesi Medical Faculty Clinical Research Ethics Board" for their contributions in the final part of her statement. The project's working team includes Prof. Dr. Baki Hazer from Kapadokya Üniversitesi, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Batur Ercan from Middle East Technical University, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rafiye Çiftçiler from Konya City Hospital.
